Funny you should bring this up. My cousin and I were talking about the very same thing today. He was pondering how you avoid marrying a "dog" if they are all covered up and you probably don't get a good look at them til marriage. I pointed out that with an attitude like that, he was the shallow "dog", and I said it was probably better because then you more than likely would end up with a woman you would be completely compatible with because looks wouldn't get in the way.

There are any number of social customs designed to introduce eligible Muslim women to searching males. Yes, parents arrange marriages for their children with children of their friends. I think parents do quite a bit of networking for years keeping up relationships with people they know with their own childrens' future mates in mind. My daughter married into a family that is originally from Pakistan. Those parents are still arranging for marriages for some of their kids (obviously NOT for my son-in-law, though).

What is really arresting to me is the lack of women out in public in Pakistan and much more so in Afghanistan. I know women have to stay home in Afghanistan unless a male relative takes them out, but it sure makes the streets look strange with only men there.
