I've seen more reputable reporting investigating the "embedded images" theory that have turned up nothing (although I don't have a link for you).

Even if this is done, it wouldn't be done in any way that could be "interpreted" by us.

Even the books on codes in the children's section of the library make it clear that "signals" can and should be done in ways that are unconnected from their meaning.

For example, the meaning of the signal "The squirrel is on the fencepost" wouldn't have ANYTHING to do with squirrels, fenceposts, positioning, farms, fences, agriculture, rodents, etc. It would mean "attack at dawn", or "meet your contact at the bus station", or whatever. Other signals would have other pre-arranged meanings.

Not only would "interpretable" signals be dangerous in case the enemy "figured them out", but they'd be stupid on the grounds that your own agents might misinterpret their meaning and fail to follow the orders you were trying to send them.

No, the only kind of coded "signal" that makes sense (i.e., are worth using) are ones that are prearranged, and whose meaning has nothing to do with their symbolic content.

And for messages that you couldn't plan for in advance by assigning them a particular signal, there's always classic encryption.

I see it this way. Take the last three letters of bin Laden's first name -- AMA. That is the abbreviation for the American Medical Association. That indicates that the next attack will be medical in origin, i.e., a biological attack. The FIRST three letters of TALiban indicate that the attack is to be faTAL, i.e., using the most virulent biological agents available: anthrax.

It's also interesting to note that the Taliban stronghold is KANDAHAR, which, spelled backward, is RAHADNAK. Coincidence? I think not!
