NYC City 4-5-6 Subway Lines Shut Down ???
10/19/01 | Nicholle

Posted on 10/19/2001 9:26:17 PM PDT by nicholle

Not sure what is up here in NYC. Just after 11pm, I attempted to enter the subway (the 6 line) at Bleeker Street. A police officer stopped me, informing me that the subway was shut down due to an anthrax scare. I have tried not to don the tin foil cap on this issue, but I have been worried about a subway release from the beginning - total nightmare senario. We would never know we had been exposed until (arguably) too late. Unfortunatly, there would be no "Cipro in case of exposure, " like in the case of the mailed letters. Any other Freepers in the city hear anything? As of yet, I have not seen any related news on this topic.

The pattern I see is alot of overblown hysteria over items that actually affected, say, far fewer people than died last year in swimming accidents.
People daily talking about surrendering liberties for security, but if the government failed to protect us before, how are further restrictions on Americans going to make it any better?
It's getting pretty bad when any quack with a quarter can make a call and paralyze entire segments of the population.

I'd rather die on my feet than live on my knees.

thats the terrorists goal. to scare us into submission, ruin our economy, and enjoy killing a few people in the process. these folks are sick as anything.

nothing wrong with looking them in the eye, but the reality is that the ultimate goal for these freaks is many more deaths and destruction than the people in swimming accidents and all. IF the anthrax scare is true, and the bomb in the bus station was a foiled attempt, what do these cowards have in mind? it wont be considered hysteria and panic IF something bad does wind up happening. but i agree completely, we cant lose our liberties, or give in to these cowards. ill get to the yanks game tomorrow with or without the subway!!!

If people in London and Berlin during the war could go on with their lives, surely we can do it too. It's possible -- though most unlikely -- that we may die in doing so, but that's better than surrendering to these villains.

The homeless will soon be out in force again

LOL Oh you mean the stinky people! I think they are already immuned to any virus. When one of them walks past you - you wish you were wearing your gas mask. I feel sorry for them and usually give them money but sometimes the smell is so bad I don't have the nerve to go near them.

"I mean can you imagine the panic and immobility that would ensue if anthrax was discovered in the subway? Tourism numbers would plummet to dismal levels, and the city would basically shut down. I live in Queens, and I have NO idea how I would get anywhere."

I see you are kind of new here. Have we had this reported from any other source?

Nothing against the Yanks, but I rellay wanted the M's to go all the way, for one reason:

To get a good look at Griffey's face when the trophy gets awarded!

I just called a friend of mine who lives on the lower east side in an attempt to confirm if it is still down. As stated earlier, I live in Queens, so when I was unable to take the subway uptown to transfer to a Queens line (the 7), I took a cab. I am now home and unable to confirm (the 4,5,6 lines are in Manhattan). However, it is worth noting that not everything that goes on in NY ends up in the news. I assume it is due to the relative over-abundance of incidences to report. Having said that, I am sure that an actual anthrax apperance in a major city subway would grace the front pages. I was hoping to elicit the help of other Freepers who live in the city to confirm whether or not it was still shut down.

as a yanks fan, it would feel much better if they lose to seattle, to see them go on and win the series WITHOUT griffey, i never liked him, gotta give piniella and company credit... johnson, a rod, and griffey have left in the last 3 years, and look what theyve done.

if someone told hillary there was an anthrax scare on the 4 train, she would ask "where is that?"

Not to get off the subject, but I was going home from work about 4:15 PST (my boss left so I decided to ditch) and right around the corner from my work a whole bunch of fire trucks, ambulances and the bomb squad were at this pizza hut. I don't know what happened though becuase I don't watch local news much. I live in Portland, Oregon.
