St. Luke Painting The Madonna
Rogier van der Weyden (b. 1400, Tournai, d. 1464, Bruxelles) <
Today is the Feast of St. Luke, Evangelist, physician and patron of artists. The "Beloved Physician" of St. Paul, Our Saint was a Greek-speaking Gentile convert from paganism, and (legend has it) an artist who painted portraits of Our Lady and other companions during his many travels across Asia Minor. Through his Gospel, Our Saint also gave us the beautiful and holy Ave Maria, the Magnificat, the Benedictus, and the Nunc Dimittis, as well as the Christmas Story in (arguably) its most beautiful form. St. Luke was born at Antioch, site of the first Christian Church outside of Jerusalem, accompaned st. Paul and other saints on their missionary journeys, and (certain traditions say) died a martyr.
Happy St. Luke's Day to my fellow artists everywhere!
