Below is a photo that was sent to me. I was told that it was taken the day after the attack on the Pentagon. I am not sure if the flag remained standing, or some one went back and stood it up .

WHile my choice of service is the Army, that is a great site to see. The USMC flag standing tall. Marines know how to fight and I respect them. This is really uplifting, it sends a message, "you can take down the Pentagon, but the military will still be standing tall ready to fight." Hooah. GOD BLESS AMERICA

In real life I'm a merchandiser for a card company (not Hallmark) and at one of my stores this morning I was putting out Veterans Day cards. Some people saw them and I ended up opening several packages so they could buy them even before I could put them on display. These cards have always sold well but this year I'm sure the company didn't send near enough.

There was a picture (I can't find it) of a Marine who climbed up and retrieved the flag and presented it to a Marine General from the Pentagon. SEMPER FI Bulldog OUT

I think that I heard that the flag was untouched after the accident. While I'm an Army brat, it is warming the way that the inter-service rivalries have gone into the trash bin after 09/11/01. When I watched the honor role of the fallen at the Pentagon Memorial Service, all branches were more than represented, to our sorrow and loss. Semper Fie to my leatherneck friends.

This looks very much like the pictue on the cover of the latest Marine Corps Gazette, published by the Marine Corps Association at Quatico, VA.

Quoting from their webpage: Marine Corps Gazette

"At 0945 on 11 September a highjacked Boeing 757—American Airlines Flight 77 bound originally for Los Angeles out of Dulles International Airport with 64 people and approximately 30,000 punds of fuel—crashed into the Pentagon's west facade.

This month's cover graphically demonstrates just a portion of the damage, along with a Marine Corps flag, still prominently standing in what was the office of Peter Murphy, Counsel to the Commandant."

I am not clear about whether or not Mr. Murphy survived the attack. I think he did. Anyone?

Hope this sheds some light on the subject.

Best Regards,

What flag? All I see in that photograph is some brownish structure set against the blue sky, and there is some red to go along with that brown.

Reminds me of Quake, Quake II, and Quake III, its all brown.

Stand up straight. Relax your knees, bend your knees, reach around behind you with your hands and fingers fully extended, bend at the waist, and pull your head out of your ass! The flag is read with yellow on it dummy!

As I understand it, that vertical sliver of red next to the outside wall on the left of the photo, is indeed a Marine Corps flag that appears as it is, standing tall.

I recall seeing on TV a Marine Major carrying that flag out from its' perch in the wreckage and presenting it to a Marine general officer.

It did this Marine's heart a ton of good to see it standing tall there!

I'm pretty new around here. Is there a register of Marine FReepers? If not, can somebody organize one? I don't have the cyber-savvy to do it.
