For those who care,"Puff the Magic Dragon" was the nickname given in Viet Nam to the C-47 gun ship (the AC-130's predecessor). The C47, used since before WW II, was a militarized DC-3; the two main differences being advanced radar in the nose cone and more powerful engines than the civilian version. The Puff came in a variety of gun configurations, including having an artillery piece in the belly of the cabin. I'm sure more technically adept contributors here can add to this general explanation.

Saw video of that thing last night -- equipped with a Gatling gun and a 105 mm Howitzer cannon; basically a flying tank.

From the AC-130 Spectre Gunship Ring:

Spectre Theme Song

16th Special Operations Squadron
Ubon, Thailand

A young airman was working on one dark and windy night,
Upon a bench he rested as he thought about his flight
When all at once a mighty fleet of big blacks birds he saw,
A flying through the darkened skies and up a bloody draw.

YIPPIE I EEH, YIPPIE I OOH, THE GHOST FLYERS IN THE SKY,

The planes were black and deadly and their guns were made of steel,
There guns were firing heavy and the sensors he could feel,
A bolt of fear went through him as they flew through the sky
For he saw the gunners working, and he heard their mournful cry,

YIPPIE I EEH, YIPPIE I OOH, THE WARLORD FLIES AGAIN.

Their face gaunt, their eyes were blurred, their shirts all soaked with sweat.
They're trying hard to gun the trucks, but they ain't gunned all yet
cause they're got to fly forever in the Southeast Asian Skies,
On places a shooting fire, as they fly on hear their cry.

YIPPIE I EEH, YIPPIE I OOH, SPECTRE IN THE SKY

As the I.O. flew on by him, he heard one call his name.
If you have no fear then volunteer to fly upon our places.
Then airman with us you will fly these Southeast Asian Skies.
A trying to gun them Gomer Trucks, across these endless skies.

YIPPIE I EEH, YIPPIE I OOH, GHOST FLYERS IN THE SKY

If you ever get in trouble, your call sign is your game,
Jolly Green will pick you up and take you home again.
So you can fly forever in Southeast Asian Skies
With Buff standing by, Spectre cannot die.

YIPPIE I EEH, YIPPIE I OOH, BUFF IS IN THE SKIES

Through these hills and valleys we will fly forever more,
For one for all and all for one until we are no more.
No Triple "A" can touch us as we do our deadly deed,
For we are the braves of thr brave, a very special breed.

YIPPIE I EEH, YIPPIE I OOH, SPECTRE FLYS AGAIN.

Words by:

TSGT David M/ Burns
Gunner AC-130 Gunship

and

SGT Fred Moorehouse
Buff (Jolly Green)

Heck, they got my vote. I always love a Johnny Cash tune...

If you want to see "Puff" in action, just watch the movie "The Green Berets" with the Duke. The pilot of Puff says "Where do you want it?".

Heck, with the rate of fire it could probably blow up a missile in mid air. It's awesome how much ammo goes into an area (see your #14 & 15) by a plane flying 300-400MPH.

The AC-130's size and multi-engine design also make it a better bet for withstanding a Stinger hit, should they fail to spoof the missile.

Speaking of overwhelming firepower, does anyone know if we have A-10s deployed?

"Could you please give me a brief summery of the pic in post # 14?"

I'm not an expert. I can only relate what I've read here on FR myself. What you're seeing are the tracer rounds, about every fifth bullet, fired from the C-130 with a time lapse camera as the C-130 flys around in a large circle. The amazing thing to me is that you're only seeing one in five bullets fired.

I always love a Johnny Cash tune...

Actually, it's a Vaughn Monroe tune from 1949.... Johnny did a nice version, though.
