WASHINGTON (CNN) -- What people in Kandahar thought was a helicopter assault late Monday in Afghanistan was a punishing attack from an AC-130 "Spectre" gunship, a senior Pentagon source said Monday.
The specially modified C-130 airplane is based at the U.S. Air Force's special operations base at Hurlburt Field, Florida, the source said Monday night. Depending on the model used in the attack, the AC-130 had either a 40mm cannon or 105mm cannon. Others are equipped with a 25mm gun.

Task Force 160 is no longer in operation.
That name dates from the late 1980's when they were first setting up.
They are now called 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment.
If you are ever in deep s**t and need someone to come and get you out of it they are the men to call!

Sorry but Spectre ain't Puff.
My personal best in the AC-130H was 35 aimed shots on multiple targets in 4 minutes and 45 seconds (20 Dec 89). Found out later that we were firing the 105 well outside its published safety limits!
If I had to hit close to friendly positions and get everyone's attention I would use the 40mm - my personal best was 100 rds on the ground in 5 minutes (SEA 75). That much firepower coming out of a dark sky makes one he** of a statement - most bad guys tend to run for the hills (those that can still move).
To my friends still flying both the AC-130U and AC-130H - good luck and good hunting!

It may have a 105mm cannon in it? That is some firepower. Neighbor who was a signal corp scout for Patton still shudders about what German 88's did.

"...most bad guys tend to run for the hills." Listen partner --- you guys scared the hell out of us good guys too, and we knew you weren't shooting at us..
