A Catholic bump from Massachusetts. I apologize for my state in advance.

Yeah, I can get behind that! I'm a Catholic in MA, originally from MS, and I can say without reservation that you Northeast Catholics are different! Maybe it comes from bring around so many other Catholics all the time. When I was growing up, the population of the whole State of MS was only 3% Catholic, and I don't think it has changed that much!

The New England Catholics are 90% liberal (I feel sorry for the other 10%), the southern Catholics are few and far between (exception: Louisiana). You need to come here to the suburban and rural MIDWEST-- conservative catholism abounds. Growing up, the term Catholic Republican was redundant in my town. ;-)

Since we're about 50% of the population, we don't get the anti-Catholic nuttiness that I see here. Sheesh. The stuff the rest of you have to put up with!

Your Mississippi background reminds me of a story I heard about 50 years ago georgia .(I am originally from New Orleans, where we were Catholics (Catholic school) or Publics (public school)
Anyway, the new pastor arrived at the Marietta train station and a young colored boy approached him with "Carry your bags, Rev?" the Priest agreed and as they were nearing the taxi stand, the priest asked "Are you a Catholic, Son ?"
Startled, the boy said "Catholic?!?" "Lawd, no. Around here, it's bad enough being a N----- !"
