Do you remember Freepin in 1998?

I first found Free Republic through Drudge Report. I found Drudge by listening to the White House briefing sessions who constantly told everyone how radical he was. (I knew he was my kind of people.)
To get to my point, or to make a short story long, Does anyone else remember freepin back then?
There were days you couldn't get on. When you did get on, it took forever to load the posts. There were three options. Next 10 - 50 -100 and a simple search engine. Remember the posts that said "Please don't post graphics, I can't read the posts if you do."?
Don't get me wrong, many of the improvements that have been made, are because the technology has changed. I also got a faster modem and new computer and learned how to use them.
I Would set my alarm for 5:00 am to get on while it wasn't busy. At first, I didn't post, there were self appointed post police that would tear you a new one, if you didn't hold your mouth just right. But finally, I thought, what the heck, they can't see me, they don't know me, I can take it.
Here I am ramblin on - what I wanted to do is say a great big thanks to John for the newest improvements.
Thanks John!!!
P.S.
When is it going to make my coffee in the morning?

Let's not forget who really brought most of us here...i42. As one of the privledged few who tended the now (thankfully) defunct 'USA vs Clinton' countdown thread I can honestly say that the Libs were wrong when they said that when he left office, the VRWC would disband.
Not likely, lefties!
BTW, when we started UvC, there were 766 days left in his inexorable reign. I could never have made through those awful days without FR.

But still great, and WAY too addictive!... I think one of my all time favorite threads was "How do you know when you are spending too much time on FR?". A Freeper, and I think it was PhantomLord, replied, "When I sit down at my computer, my wife asks me if I'm on that G**D*** FreeRepublic site again. And I just say, No Dear, I'm downloading porn. And she is happy!" :o) fsf

What ever happened to Freeper Island?Well now; shortly after beowolf took the keys to the still, Dude Hellish shot the Moose in the arse and Billie and some of the other girls turned the saloon into a fern bar which ticked off the drunks who left for more slutty environs. Freeper Island is still there but hardly nobody goes into the saloon no more now that the pig don't sing.

I had a different handle back then. I remember a guy (can't remember the handle) who posted a free republic crossword puzzle. Think I still have it somewhere.

I also remember the political discussions with a poster named harrowup (handle was Dennis from Lebonon, PA back then).

Dude Hellish shot the Moose in the arse A Møøse once bit my sister...
As several of you might have surmised, if I see a reference to a moose in a thread I cannot help but post MP&tHG credits.

I lurked on FR in '97 and finally registered in early '98 (February I believe). I still come to FR in an attempt to learn the truth behind the news. Can usually find it unless the issue concerns the mid-east - this subject will always bring out those who apparently are paid to sit on FR and wait for postings on this particular issue.
