The Neverending Story
An ongoing debate on Scripture, Tradition, History and Interpretation.
Statesmen may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue. - John Adams |

FYI:) Did you know that the catholic religion has a differnt set of 10 commandments then protestants and IFBB's.

[SD} Indeed He might. Now do you have absolutely nothing in your possession with an image of anything in earth, the sea or heaven. Remember the little girl with the raincoat on the Morton Salt box? What about the Land O Lakes Indian girl? You're going to hell I guess.
SD won't respond to me, but will you ask him if he knows what a "graven image" is?
====================================
[SD] Circumstances change. You must admit that. The type of language used when practically everybody in existence is a Catholic and no one has been "brought up" differently is a different sitation from what exists today.
Angelo; since I'm not allowed to question this might you do it for me? Is this historically accurate? "Practically everyone in existence is a Catholic". No Islam? No "non Catholic"? Not "most" of the people in the world were not Catholic?
Or this? SD" It realy hinges on what is meant by "every human creature." It simply does not include whole classes of people who either did not exist then, or were not known about then. Today the phrase has a broader meaning."
Didn't the Church know? Even with the help of the Magisterium?

In any event, let me say this, IMNSHO You are among the saved.

And of course, all this has nothing to do with the point under discussion, and everything to do with Protestant iconoclasm, which is essentially a reaction to Catholic forms of worship in the 16th Century. The Protestant cult has to do with making the BOOK the object of worship, as can be seen most clearly in Zwingli's Church in Zurich.

I would hope so. Otherwise the Pope would have a real hard time expaining away his unfalible choise to bow before, and kiss the feet of, the statue of Peter in the Vatican.
To: OLD REGGIE
As I have mentioned before, one often sees statues of Jesus in grave yards in the South. Creeping Catholicism, of course.

Conversations about cheese can last a long time. A little too long, IMO:)

God sin't just talking about idols that have been made. According to Romans 1:21-25 He is also talking about the imagination of our hearts with which we make the gods we want.
When we give God traits that WE want him to have, such as, as long as we believe in God we'll be OK, or God is so loving and merciful in the end he will forgive everything and every one will go to heaven and live happily ever after, we are inventing and idol in our minds, and God condemns this.

When I received my 1st Holy Communion I received a statue of Mary from my grandmother, and I remember her telling me to be sure and take it up to the priest and have it blessed. This also calls to rememberance on Easter all the little kids took their Easter baskets full of candy and (and grandma always put some hard boiled eggs in our baskets too) eggs down to the alter after mass and the priest sprinkled them with holy water and blessed them. Grandma always made us eat blessed hard boiled eggs for breakfast when we got back to her house after mass. Do you all still do this? is this not worshipping idols?

Dare we ask who was the actual woman whos likeness is said to be that of Mary?
Don't try to tell me she is not a beautiful, pure white woman, with Rosary beads in her hand. Those little kids in Fatima couldn't be mistaken.
To: PayNoAttentionManBehindCurtain
Shouldn't it be paynoattentionwomanbehindcurtain?
Yes it is. Unless someone can break out the Bible and tell me what the heck eggs and Christ have in common.
Anyway, shouldn't most people question the origination of these rediculous, unbiblical practices???

God sin't just talking about idols that have been made.
Imagine the end time, and there are two men standing there saying, I am Christ, come with me.
One of them is an average height and stocky built man, dark curly short hair, brown eyes, olive skin color, ruddy completion and rather comely looking.
The other man is tall, slender build, white skin, sharp boned nose, long light colored shoulder length hair, compassionate looking face, and wearing a long flowing white robe.
Both of them say I am the Christ, follow me.
Which one do you think most would follow?

Speaking of historical circumstances, you would do well to ponder those that led to the proclamation of Papal infallability: was is basically the final answer to the old question: in case of dispute between Council and pope, who prevails? Answer? The pope. Beyond him the only appeal is to God.
I'm afraid I'm not following you. It seems to me the Popes' army was defeated, the prospect of temporal power was over, and Pope Pius IX took advantage of the opportunity. Any good politician would have done the same thing.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to turn the whole idol thing into a catholic bashing thing because I think many of us are guilty of the same thing. Nearly every church I've seen uses a cross, or a fish, as a symbol of Christ.
I can't count the number of pieces of jewelry that have a the symbol of the cross. We might not kiss them and we say we don't worship them, but once you assign a "symbol" to a deity it's a slippery slope.
Some might use a cross to help them be "reminded" of Christ. Others might use a picture of the devil to remind them of Christ. Outwardly there's no difference in their practices because nobody but God knows your inward motivation.
God in his wisdom knew that symbols, icons, and images were subject to human design and human interpetation. That's why he said "No graven images", so that we wouldn't limit him or his power to our images.
To: JHavard
Both of them say I am the Christ, follow me. Which one do you think most would follow? Well if they were familiar with the bible, they wouldn't follow any one of them... :-)
Mat 24:23 "At that time, if anyone says to you, 'Look! Here is the Christ!' or 'There he is!', don't believe it.
Mat 24:27 For just as the lightning comes from the east and flashes as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.
Apparently the second coming of Christ isn't going to be hard to miss...it will be a visible event that's unmistakable.
