The Neverending Story
An ongoing debate on Scripture, Tradition, History and Interpretation.

Statesmen may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue. - John Adams

Oops, "so more precise" should be "so much more precise". I hate it when I do that.

Hmm... the opposite is true... "The Lord is truly Evil (or Bad?) to those who disobey"?

Well, I guess wasting words is just what you get for assuming meaning, huh? LOL Try again - possibly with a little more honesty behind it, you may get it right.

Read Daniel. Christ hasn't fulfilled the prophesies regrding the overthrow of the fourth nation and the building of his church in it's place unless the Church is built in Rome.

I love reading Daniel. Please give chapter and verse so I can look it up. Thanks.

But your statements about Protestant founders and doctrine are as destructive and divisive as any I've read about your leaders and doctrine.

I'm not sure what you are referring to but I'm sure you will give me examples.

Is it any wonder that the Baptists ended the talks with the Catholics?

Being a former Southern Baptist it doesn't surprise me at all.

But the GOOD news (no.. not that good news) is that for the last few years, the success of my favorite sports teams has an an indirect relationship to the success of my political candidates.

Does this mean that if the Redskins go 0-16, then Bush will have an approval rating of 100%?

IMHO, God gave us the NT in Greek for the reason that the language is so more precise

Well, I guess I won't disagree with that although I always thought it was written in greek because that was the language used by literate people everywhere at the time. I guess it doesn't matter - although I thought you guys always preferred the original KJV to the greek text.

It has always amazed me though that the people who understand Greek the best (you know - all those people in Greece?) never seemed to hit it off with some of these funky translational ideas you guys come up with. They pretty much stuck with their orthodox beliefs (including the role of Peter).

Read Daniel. Christ hasn't fulfilled the prophesies regrding the overthrow of the fourth nation and the building of his church in it's place unless the Church is built in Rome. The apostles knew this and it shows why Rome was the focus of evangelism from the earliest days of the church (did you know that Rome was the only church that Paul wrote to when he had never been there? - just an aside).

What? are we playing guessing games now? Hey IMRight, read Jeremiah and tell me what you think.:-)

Please point me to a web site that charges a Protestant Church with sending out their Bible students to kill all Catholics, and, Oh yes, the men who trained and sent them out were their ministers.

I don't know if I can do that however all you have to do is read what Oliver Cromwell did to the Catholics in Ireland and that should make your blood boil. Why are we even discussing this?

Hey. Maybe I'm just picking on your grammar (pot/kettle alert!), but you used a capital "G"ood. I can only presume that the opposite is "Evil". Why don't you tell me what you meant?

Hey Hav, I've finally figured out why Dfendr came up with this guru garbage last night. Ya ever notice the condescending tone mixed in with the mystical stuff? Reminds me of the maharashi yogi.

He thinks his wits and knowledge mean something to God or to me. I'd rather see the Spirit in action in his life. But I think he has a little s leading him about - that or pride. It'd be nice to see him get over it. He'll go mad trying to psychoanylize a spirit filled christian.. LOL

I tried, but neither CCEL, or CE has him listed.

Another point is when Martin Luther declared everything we need for salvation is found in the bible and we can all interpret it with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, this was a novel idea.

Novel idea indeed!

ST. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM OF ANTIOCH AND BYZANTIUM* (347-407) [The Scripture], like a safe door, denies an entrance to heretics, guarding us in safety in all things we desire, and not permitting us to be deceived. ...Whoever uses not the Scriptures, but comes in otherwise, that is, cuts out for himself a different and unlawful way, the same is a thief. (Homily 59, in Joh. 2:8)

Formerly it might have been ascertained by various means which was the true church, but at present there is no other method left for those who are willing to discover the true church of Christ but by the Scriptures alone. And why? Because heresy has all outward observances in common with her. If a man, therefore, be desirous of knowing the true church, how will he be able to do it amid so great resemblance, but by the Scriptures alone? Wherefore our Lord, foreseeing that such a great confusion of things would take place in the latter days, ordered the Christians to have recourse to nothing but the Scriptures.

The man of God could not be perfect without the Scriptures. [Paul says to Timothy:] “You have the Scriptures: if you desire to learn anything, you may learn it from them.” But if he writes these things to Timothy, who was filled with the Holy Spirit, how much more must we think these things spoken to us. (Hom. 9 in 2 Tim. 1:9)

It is absurd, while we will not trust other people in pecuniary affairs, but choose to reckon and calculate for ourselves, that in matters of far higher consequence we should implicitly follow the opinions of others, especially as we possess the most exact and perfect rule and standard by which to regulate our several inquiries: I mean the regulation of the divine laws. I, therefore, could wish that all of you would reject what this or that man says, and that you would investigate all these things in the Scriptures. (Hom. 13, 4:10 ad fin. in 2 Cor.)

that or pride

Confession time here (but I'll share the blame with the rest of you)
Probably all of us on these threads suffer from an abundance of pride. Neither side (really, none of the many sides) really acts in a way that would be effective in a one-on-one evangelism of a lost soul and outsiders surfing here would certainly not "know us by our love" for one another.

I did't read last night's posts from him (this new self-search aides my self-centeredness), but I do remember D-Fendr sending me private FReepmails counseling me on the way I cam across to some who disagreed with me.

Just a thought. Can't we all just get along ;-(

To: Pelayo
You say it is all metaphor but why, do you not believe that Christ is capable of such an act? Or that it would be usless for our salvation?

Read the Chapter again Pelayo, and break it down. Look at the way he states the argument each time. He goes from the blatent to the metaphor and the metaphor is what trips them up. The Jews didn't understand but the disciples understood fullwell that the whole time he was saying "Hey, You have to believe in me to be saved". The Disciples that left were with him and yet didn't believe, just as Judas didn't. If they'd seen all he'd wrought, heard all he'd said up to then and still didn't believe, they weren't going to. He was already going to die for them; what more do you want, him to tackle them at sword point and say convert or die? That isn't the way the Lord works. Our faith and our choice - not his. He'd just said his peace and explained it several times - they already understood. And the understanding of the statement ticked them off. You might as well say the figured him for a quack or a blasphemer.

Jesus is capable of anything. But capability and usefulness combined with action are not there. Belief in the Lord and the acceptance of the sacrifice is our salvation. You want that to be it, then you also want communion to be it, and baptism...... No, that isn't how it works. The belief as Jesus says over and over all through the Gospels is the only way. The Only way - period. He made no exceptions. Communion is a rememberance. And Baptism is a command. Salvation is gained only by confession of faith in Jesus. One gate, one path - long and narrow. And few find it. Not because it is hard to see; but, because people will not heed the word or the Lord.

There is more I can say; but, if you don't get this, you won't get the rest either.
