Clinton's treason, foreign policy his downfall

There are many reasons why Bill Clinton did not get support from the American public.

I am proud to be a Republican. I am pleased to tell Linda Archer [letter, Oct. 2] why Clinton did not get support. First, he was one of the poorest presidents in foreign policy since Jimmy Carter.

In [1993], when Clinton-Gore took over the leadership of this nation, the United States had won the Cold War, had made friends with our former enemy, the Soviet Union, and had just won the Gulf War. The United States was the world's only superpower and was highly respected by friends and enemies.

After eight years of Clinton-Gore bumbling and near-treasonous activity, American foreign policy is in shambles. The blame for this sorry state is laid clearly at the feet of Clinton, who used the power of the United States to protect himself from the consequences of his shocking immorality and public corruption.

Clinton systematically weakened the military, driving 18,000 pilots to retire early. He allowed China to take over both ends of the Panama Canal despite the pleas of the Panama government. He sent James Carville to Mexico to work against the candidacy of Vicente Fox and backed a discredited candidate tied to drug cartels.

Clinton used visits to China and Russia to gain some relief from the scandals with Monica [Lewinsky]. In Somalia he allowed the bodies of American soldiers to be dragged through the streets without punishing anybody. His gutless approach in this and in handling Bosnia have given the terrorists the idea that we are weak and will not defend our interests for fear of losing an American soldier.

He may be responsible for the present terrorist activity, since he stripped the CIA of spy activity by making it impossible to hire undercover agents. At the end of his presidency America was weak and vulnerable - an open target for terrorists.

When Clinton illegally took campaign contributions from the head of the Chinese intelligence chief, he committed treason. He also committed treason when he sold our defense secrets to the Chinese military in exchange for campaign contributions. Clinton's main aim appears to have been the maintenance of his power and the power of the Democratic Party.

This guy apparently does his research in The National Enquirer. If he read anything, he would know that President Reagan signed the executive order banning assassination of foreign enemies and restricting the CIA, and several Congressional actions followed that up, years before Clinton was ever elected.

I think he is specifically referring to the 1995 or 1996 legislation, sponsored by Rep. (now Senator) Robert Torricelli, that prohibited the CIA from hiring any foreign operatives with criminal records.

The writer is referring to the Clinton policy where the CIA was banned from hiring informants or spies who had shady backgrounds. This was a change from previous administrations and dates to around 1996, not to prior administrations. It has made human intelligence next to impossible since potential informants in dictatorships, drug cartels and terrorist groups are extremely unlikely to be totally clean. Second, the Executive Order saying assassinations were against US policy was first promulagated by Gerald Ford (and later resigned by Carter, Reagan, Bush, and Clinton). Third, congressional limitations began in the 70's with Senator Frank Church. I find it interesting that you're trying to blame Reagan, the post-Watergate President who gave the CIA the most freedom to get things done. Obviously, Saint Bill was incapable of ever making a mistake in your eyes.
