FreeRepublic: Changes in Style Sheets

Posted on 10/14/2001 3:18:53 PM PDT by John Robinson

Attention those with custom style sheets: you will want to revisit your settings to enter a URL to your style sheet; you can now use a style sheet saved on your local computer, or choose one of the predefined style sheets I have made available.

Too funny, just posted about this.

A circumflex, or "hat", signifies the link's target will be another window. Mnemonic: ^ means "popup"

You only see this if you've chosen to view links in other than the same window. See Settings.

I'm not sure how to check.

About only says 4.7.
Release notes hint that it is 4.72, but do not say.

HTTP_USER_AGENT is Mozilla/4.7 [en] (WinNT; I)

Blah.

Sounds like 4.72. I know that 4.76 and 4.77 stated that they were 4.76 and 4.77 in the About Netscape page, but earlier versions simply had 4.7 there.

NS came closer to supporting style sheets in each release of 4.x. It sounds like .72 has a problem with background images in general, while .77 seems to have a problem with multiple background images (don't remember the minimal and dreary tomb suffering from a partial display in what few tests I did with them). I would try to install .78 (I REALLY hate DumbUpdate; it keeps on booting me after saying I am running low on disk space; this on a system with 6 GB of space remaining and after a full defrag), and then recommend that to anyone that uses NS 4.x to access FR.

I'll try upgrading.

You can try bringing your avail disk space to under 4 gig, or maybe even under 2 gig. Netscape might have some legacy code which does not recognize large partitions.

Copy some large folder several times to bring down the avail disk space.

Geez, SmartUpdate makes you jump through hoops. Microsoft's update service is much better.

Okay, installed 4.78. And it works! 4.7 (4.72) blows.

Thanks.

Back to the drawing board on the header. Unless embedding the fr_header class inside a table tag works in 4.78, guess the header class will have to remain unsupported in NS 4.

Will have to try spoofing SmartUpdate when I get a new drive. There seems to be a hole at about the 9 GB point (4 GB remaining), where the drive just takes forever to find or write anything (at least until ScanDisk looks and finds no problems).

I used SmartUpdate with a 30 GB drive with almost 6 GB available, no problem. You have an odd problem.

Could you make the background-attachment : fixed for the marbled one? Fixed always kicks butt!

Figures. Nutscape Smart Update is about the only thing I ever had a problem with on my computer (besides the bi-annual hard-drive replacement, and it's that time again).

Trying to get the header behave for Nutscape 4.x was a thought, but it isn't happening, and it broke the font color on my style sheet in every browser, as well as the font size and margin on all the style sheets in IE. Guess it's back to embedding the header class inside the table tag and not supporting custom headers for NS 4 folks.

Question; is a fixed-in-place background a browser-specific feature (like, say, marquee)? If so, I doubt it'll be included in a general-release version. If not, then why not give it a shot.

John, the style sheets look great on my WebTV. Haven't decided which one I like better yet.

Its ignored if the browser doesnt understand it. I love it and i know NS 6.1 and ie6 understands it.

The reason I asked is when something that's not exactly supported is shoved in a style sheet, it tends to break things. Since the newer browser do support it, test it out to make sure it works as you think it should and suggest it.

the thing about it, is it doesnt do anything besides tell the background to stay put or not. So nothing really could blow it up. I urge John try it

There are so many options to tinker with, one doesn't know where to begin. Excellentamundo!! {But I miss the ability to post a reply to "ALL" of the folks on a given thread. Any chance of creating a general pseudonym of "ALL" to allow that to happen?)
