Donate Blood (Phase 2)
American Red Cross ^ | Myself

Posted on 10/10/2001 9:14:05 AM PDT by 2Jedismom

On September 11th and in the days that followed, people lined up to give blood. It was a way for people to help. Unfortunately, those people are now ineligible to give again, because there is a 56 day waiting period between times you can give. Blood has a shelf life of 42 days (except plasma, which can be frozen). So you can see how there can be a potential shortage of blood nationwide coming up soon.

I'm asking my fellow freepers who didn't give on 9/11 to "stand in the gap" and schedule a time to donate blood sometime within the next three weeks.

"ps: It didn't even hurt a little."

$@$* That's the reason I was gonna give. I was hoping it hurt at least a little. Just kidding. Giving has been a 30 year habit for me. I now give plateletes about once a month instead of whole blood every 56 days. It takes about 2 hours including the paperwork, but it really really helps the ones who are faced with the most dire circumstances. There is a constant need for this type of donor as well. Please consider it for your next donation.

Thank you for your comments and the bump. The Red Cross lady also mentioned giving platelets.

Another good reason to donate blood is that it will substantially reduce cholesteral and iron levels.

It's true!

My stubbornly high cholesteral dropped although I'd made no dietary/exercise changes. The only thing different was that I'd started giving blood regularly. When I asked the Red Cross blood donation nurse if there was a relationship, he looked around to make sure no one was listening and said: We aren't supposed to tell you this but YES!

"Another good reason to donate blood is that it will substantially reduce cholesteral and iron levels."

This part is especially important for post-menopausal women. A woman's risk of heart attack approaches that of a man only after menopause. The reason is thought to be the higher iron levels in the blood that result once a women passes that stage of life.

2 Hours ?? I usually give at my church & schedule an appointment during one of the services when there's usually a lull. I can get through in less than an hour. Just about time to give again.

You can give plateletes in less than an hour? In ten years of giving plateletes, with the paperwork, the screening, and the donation, I've never been done in less than close to 2 hours.
