Donate Blood (Phase 2)

On September 11th and in the days that followed, people lined up to give blood. It was a way for people to help. Unfortunately, those people are now ineligible to give again, because there is a 56 day waiting period between times you can give. Blood has a shelf life of 42 days (except plasma, which can be frozen). So you can see how there can be a potential shortage of blood nationwide coming up soon.
I'm asking my fellow freepers who didn't give on 9/11 to "stand in the gap" and schedule a time to donate blood sometime within the next three weeks.

Hate to be critical during these troubled times but you would be hard pressed to find a more badly managed and administered organization than the American Red Cross.

From another thread:
NY Times says this morning that there is adequate blood supplies available now [Sept. 11th]. I think more may be needed in the weeks and months ahead.
This is exactly what the Red Cross worker was saying last night. So many people gave that can't give now. But the need that always exists is still there.

You guys are the best! Thanks for posting and letting me know. Give this a bump now and then, would you?
My husband gave on the 9th, just before what happened to the WTC. The lady at the blood bank told me that since he was O+, his most assuredly went straight to NYC.
I set my appointment up to be on the 9th as well, and we are going to alternate giving monthly. He's due to give again on the 5th of November.

Thank you!

I'm more concerned about Arafat's blood donation. Is it coming to America? Have we lost track of it? Can we trace it? I'm scared and you should be too.

Along those same lines, can the Red Cross sell blood to raise money?
The injured requiring blood at the towers were not great in number.

Thank you!
Hey, you know what I discovered? A normal cup of coffee packs a whallop when you just gave blood! I could barely type this morning! LOL

I don't know about selling the blood, but I do know that except for the plasma, all that blood that was given on 9/11 will be worthless after the 23rd of this month. And because so many people gave, they can't give again to cover what will normally be needed for patients like cancer patients and emergencies that show up. My desire is to get the word out for people that didn't give before to give now to cover for those who normally give and gave on the 11th. Like substitutes for a while, till they can give again.
