I'm testing a new thread layout. On latest posts, you will see a "beta" link for each article. Click it to read the article in the new thread style.
"Why fix it if it ain't broke?"
Well, it is broken, and it needs to be fixed. The old style Free Republic threads on average consumed 65 kilobytes per view. Multiply that by 600,000 articles served per day and that adds up to a big chunk of bandwidth.
I believe this new format will consume less resources. An eyeball estimate would put that average at about 15-20 kilobytes per view. You may have noticed how bandwidth starved Free Republic has been lately. It's been real slow during the morning. This new software, when fully implemented, should alleviate that problem.
I decided to include these instructions just in case you didn't do this next step. Hopefully, if you didn't, it will help.
shouldn't I be able to select "old style" once and have my settings stay that way?
Not that I'm against new things, I just prefer the "old style"
Cote, are you able to open a new thread in the "old style"?
This is SO frustrating! Can you help out here, John?
Seriously, I want the "Classic" view to be as close to the old style that nobody will even remember there was such a thing. It's pretty close now.
Thank you. Will that save our settings?
I have noticed over the course of the day that the 'new style' is looking more and more like the 'old style'. That's good, because some of us were having a problem being able to read the threads earlier today. The font seemed small. It is much better now.
The other question I have is, in order to post an article are we going to have to learn CSS? I sure hope not, because most of the people I have talked to don't want to have anything to do with it. I've looked over the tutorials on CSS and I can't figure it out.
I included that return link for the settings. When you click a setting it saves immediately. Just use the provided Return link to get back to the article.
Thanks for fixing the 'settings' page.
That's a shame. The "old style" is the easiest to read/use/understand format I've seen on the 'net. Just my personal preference (gee, I sure wish it could stay!)
Thanks for everything you do on FR John. Guess I'll just have to learn the "new way" or develop a "classic" style sheet! LOL!
Regards,
My request is a search box on the "post article" page ABOVE the form. I think it would be a wonderful reminder to search for a previous post before posting. It's an idea, anyhow.
callisto
Even after John fixed the settings page, I still can't get my settings to save. All pages open for me in the new style. But, you're right, it doesn't matter anyway. Actually, I am seeing less and less difference between the old and new now. I think I can deal with this.
Now, if we can get our music and our backgrounds back on our profile pages, all will be well! LOL!
that sure was a nice handy way to point someone to a particular
post without having to wade through an entire thread...
and btw, the new format is lookin' really good, imho.
