Anthrax???

Posted on 10/04/2001 6:24:14 PM PDT by Sparky760

Hope this is the right place to post this.....still learning here so forgive me if it is not. Is anyone else concerned? Seems odd to me that they are not telling us where this guy might have caught this from, just that he has it. The first thing I thought of was that supposed missing crop duster plane, wasn't that near Florida? All very strange.

It's the right place.

I, too, am wondering about "It's an isolated case."

Yah, first in the U.S. in 25 years. Somebody figure the odds. Isolated, indeed.

Isolated case - we get a few every decade. Crop duster is probably under the ocean by now. Worry about the BIG stuff, Sparky - not the speculative items!

BTW, since you mentioned you are new: I probably would have tacked this question onto an existing thread about the anthrax news report out of FL. You can still accomplish getting your questions out there, without creating a non-news thread. Vanities, as they are called here, are generally frowned upon. I've been here about 1 year and posted 2. Next year, I hope to reduce that figure by half.

If the crop duster did this I can assure there would a hell of a lot more people in the hospital than one 86 year old man. Put the gas masks away.

Annie, The CDC is saying this is the first case in the last 25 years. I think it may be isolated, but the timing is odd, to say the least.

Thank you for the input. I am having a little trouble figuring out where everything belongs. I suppose I should just stick to adding to existing threads for a while

Lantana man hospitalized with Anthrax

The Associated Press Thursday, October 4, 2001

TALLAHASSEE (AP) -- A 63-year-old businessman has been hospitalized in Palm Beach County with pulmonary anthrax, a highly lethal disease mentioned as a possible biological weapon. But

U.S. Health Secretary Tommy Thompson said Thursday there is no evidence this case was a result of terrorism.

‘‘This is an isolated case and it’s not contagious, ’’ Thompson said at a White House news conference. He said such incidents are ‘‘rare, very rare.’’

Anthrax has been developed by some countries as a possible biological weapon. But the disease can be contracted naturally; the bacterial spores can be found in soil and are often carried by livestock.

Officials said the Florida victim is an avid outdoorsman. Thompson said the last U.S. case of anthrax was earlier this year in Texas. But that case was not pulmonary anthrax, in which the disease settles in the lungs.

The Lantana man, whose name was not released, checked into a hospital on Tuesday and it was initially believed he had meningitis, Lt. Gov. Frank Brogan said. But X-rays and other testing showed that it was pulmonary anthrax. The disease is treated with antibiotics. Brogan said the man had recently traveled to North Carolina and became ill shortly after he returned. The incubation period for the disease can be 60 days.

Tim O’Connor, spokesman for the Palm Beach health department, said the case is ‘‘very likely’’ to be fatal. Anthrax is a spore-forming bacterium that is especially virulent if inhaled. The disease causes pneumonia. There is a vaccine to prevent the spread of the disease.

All forms are rare, but the most recent cases including ones in Texas and North Dakota -- have been so-called cutaneous cases resulting from handling animals.

During the 20th century, only 18 cases of inhaled anthrax have been reported in the United States, the most recent in 1976. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the FBI are investigating.

Yes..this was already posted....but bears repeating. I found out that my girlfriend was feeding their pets when they went to North Carolina.

These people (MAUREEN AND ROBERT) live RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER from one of the airports where some of the Terrorists flew from and/or practiced. Coincidence?

This man and his wife fed feral cat colonies...very kind people.

ALSO...I heard it IS PULMANARY anthrax! I heard he caught it airborne. Can't veriify that though...just heard it on the local radio.

Would all the cases turn up immediately, or is there a delay?

See article in #7 where it says: "Thompson said the last U.S. case of anthrax was earlier this year in Texas."

What is the likelihood of the feral cats having a case of anthrax and giving off the airborne version to a human? Generally it's sheep and cattle that get the disease but can cats get it?

The Texas case of anthrax was NOT airborne anthrax. Airborne anthrax is extremely rare.

PLEASE!!! Don't you dare blame it on cats (they have shots, and are fixed and healthy and fed)..they get a bad rap as it is...poor things.

Concentrate on South florida...airport around the corner where they live....and the terorists lived here. Lantana is right by Delray beach..a few miles. About 7 of them lived here in Delray.

There is definitely a delay, it takes between a few days and several weeks, see this link for details.

Do ALL of the feral cats have their shots or are more cats joining the group? I'm not sure at all that it's even possible that a cat with the disease COULD transmit this disease to a human in the airborne form. It's definitely possible to conduct it through skin contact if someone has a cut but then it's not pulmonary anthrax (which is what the fellow in FL has). Anyway, it's just a thought. We're looking for explanations beyond bio-terrorism.

ALL the cats get shots and are fixed. If a new cat shows up to the colony it is immediately captured and taken to the vet. The purpose is to stop them from breeding...and keep them healthy and give them somewhat of a life.

IMOP....there were a number of operatives that did not get to complete there mission, comencing 09/11/01 due to the "lock down" imposed by the U.S.A., a "lock down" designed to squelch any further bull shit associated with the master plan.
In regards to the Greyhound incident, when was the last time(O.J. X-cluded) a crime in US was "slashing a throat"??
Not a western type assult, we bash heads or shoot our victims.

Also, the air craft over the Black Sea was at 30 thousand feet.....do the Croats have a missle capable of a 1 shot feat that sucsesfull?

Lots of ????? here and right fully so.....

Well...that's to much coincidence for me. Maybe they did a little spraying before they left to do their suicide thing.
