CHIEF negotiator dies in east Houston house fire
Houston Chronicle ^ | October 4, 2001 | S.K. BARDWELL

Posted on 10/04/2001 9:29:36 AM PDT by Taxman

A 53-year-old man died in an early morning house fire in southeast Houston today.

The man, whose name has not yet been released [I confirmed that this was, indeed, my FRiend, Herb Meadows, known to all of us on FRee Republic by his screen name, "CHIEF negotiator"] was found by Houston firefighters in a bathroom in the rear of his home in the 8000 block of Glencrest, after the house burned about 1:30 a.m.

Firefighters said the man's wife told them she was watching television in the home's living room when she heard a loud pop and her husband shouting from the back of the home.

The woman tried unsuccessfully to rescue her husband, firefighters said. She was taken to St. Luke's Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation symptoms.

Firefighters said it appeared the man tried to get out of the burning home, but the heavy smoke entered the bathroom, where he collapsed.

Arson investigators are at the scene of the fire this morning looking for its cause.

You know Taps. So appropriate.

So long soldier. He may have desired to die in battle,
but death is never listless, as men are wont to be.
RIP Marine.

How terrible. He was a great man and a fine freeper. I don't think he had an enemy here. America needs men like him. He will be missed by everyone.

That's two freepers in the last 30 days.

In silent tribute we stand all,

Another warrior has received the call.

Til the bye and bye when we shall meet,

With tears of joy each shall greet.

This doesn't seem possible!

I'm am just stunned by this terrible news! :(

Chief Negotiator was on of my favorite posters here, and I just posted on his thread last night, I'm so glad I did.

I'm going to save it, it was a classic and all about his proud MARINE Tradition.

I know that he had some very good friends on this forum, and I can't imagine this painful loss.

If there is anything special they are doing for his family, please let us know!

What a terrible loss for his wife and family....and for all his friends/fans here at Free Republic.....

:(.....

My last post to him was on an inane subject. He liked a porter steak, with Blue Nun riesling. He admitted to me that a Cabernet would work too.

Rest in piece, Chief.
