WASHINGTON, Oct 3 (Reuters) - The crash of a Greyhound bus in Tennessee on Wednesday appears to have been a "random" event unrelated to last month's terror attacks on the United States, the Transportation Department said.
The department believes "it was a random incident not related to the September 11 terrorist attacks," said Dave Longo, a spokesperson for the Federal Motorcarrier Administration, a division of the Transportation Department.
But he said there were conflicting reports "and we are waiting for more details to come in from the field."
Greyhound Lines suspended bus services across the United States after at least three people were killed in a crash that television reports attributed to a passenger attack on the bus driver.

Greek police kill bus hijacker
The Greek authorities say an armed Albanian man who hijacked a bus has been killed. All the hostages were freed safely.
The hijacker was shot dead by police after being disarmed by one of his hostages, an off-duty conscript soldier, according to Greek Defence Minister Akis Tsohatzopoulos.
The minister contradicted earlier police accounts, which said elite forces had burst into the bus and disarmed the hijacker, who had apparently been carrying hand grenades.
Earlier, the man had released two of his seven hostages, keeping the others on board the bus, which he had hijacked near the port of Thessaloniki.
Police had surrounded the vehicle and were negotiating with the man, who was said to have demanded money and a safe passage to Albania.
The hijacker took control of the bus on Wednesday and apparently tried to cross into Albania. But the vehicle was stopped on a country road about 10km east of the northern town of Florina.
Some 50 people were on board when it was seized, but most were later set free.
The hijacker threatened to kill the remaining hostages if the police tried to intervene.
It was the second time in less than two months that an Albanian citizen had hijacked a Greek public bus.
On the first occasion, the bus was eventually stormed by Albanian special police units. The hijacker and one of the nine hostages were killed in the cross-fire.
Throw all muslims out of the country.
Close the borders.
Then start working on the citizen-traitors who let this all happen.
If they did that, then either they're idiots -- or -- there is something more here that the public is not being told. So, what is it?
You said --
I disagree. When we grounded all planes on 9/11 I have heard several news articles about groups of arab speaking men arguing and suddenly leaving departure gates. I also heard that a passenger on the bus said the man who attacked the driver was anxiously asking for the time repeatedly before the attack. It does not take much to figure there may be a connection. All we need to look at is the actions in Israel to see this is the way the terrorists will act.
Well, you see..., that was my point. It was a stupid thing to do -- UNLESS -- they knew something more than they are saying right now. You are pointing out the very thing that I'm implying there. It's not stupid -- IF -- there is something more to it (which is not in the reports that we are hearing). You know how the authorities and officials never say any more than they have to. This kind of action by Greyhound indicates something further than we've been told.
I wasn't "calling it tinfoilhat," I was bumping it to the tinfoilhat list, so that the more conspiracy-minded can look at it. The characterization of the attack as "random" certainly makes it of interest to such people.
Some terrorist.
It sounds like maybe they are having to bring in their J.V. third string, because the 1st and 2nd string varsity are in FBI custody.
I thought that was strange, too. If he had only little money he could have bought a cheap watch for under $10.00. Maybe he wanted people to notice what time he slashed the driver's throat?
Maybe he wanted to help his fellow terrorists but is afraid to fly or gets air sick.
Obviously, we'd all like some more information about the attacker. The fact that he was a foreigner from the Balkans makes us wonder if he was doing this as a terrorist attack, but it's less obvious than if he were carrying an Egyptian passport and was obviously arab.
Certainly this type of attack wouldn't be something orchestrated by bin Laden. He goes for the more spectacular stuff. In the overall scheme of things, this is pretty small potatoes.
My own guess is that this guy had mental problems. If he is a Moslem, then perhaps he was literally on a Jihad and doing his part to kill Americans independently of any outside direction.
But it's also completely possible that this guy was a simple nutcase, and the repeated asking about the time seems to bolster that, in my opinion.
It is not in our interest or consistant with what America stands for, to target all Muslims.
