POST BOOMERS/PRE X - finally, a thread just for us - Thread 5

Posted on 10/02/2001 7:36:41 PM PDT by WIMom

Last night, there was an anti baby boom thread that started with a rant, and before some disruptor trashed it, some of us who were born at the tail end of the baby boom - from 1956 to 1964 - were having some nice recollections. The things that we seem to have in common are the following:

1. We were too young to serve in Vietnam, but remember the news.

2. As far as we're concerned, the music, television and popular entertainment and heroes of the 60s were and still are a matter for personal taste, and don't represent the shining apex of all civilization, icons to be revered by generations to come - in short, the Beatles were just a band that some might not like, and old Trek was cheesy and not well written.

3. Old boomers came into adulthood at the ideal economic circumstance - we've had to work for ours.

4. Our clothes and music tended to be lighthearted, and we are more conservative/libertarian as a whole than the older boomers.

So post your memories of tunes, movies, shows, fashions, school stuff, etc.

And enjoy yourselves!

Thanks to one_particular_harbour for the fantastic idea!

I do indeed remember Coney - we went there every year for my parents' company picnics. And I went to KI for the same reason (we only got to go once a year - too expensive, and it seemed like such a long drive!) the first year it opened. My mom still has the 1st year ticket stubs framed somewhere.

Coney's still a pretty nice place.

Best Soap ever!! Holland Taylor and Jim Carrey's second wife, I can't remember her name...she was leading lady in "Dumb and Dumber". Watched that soap with my mom and was so sad when it went off the air.

Well I wouldnt mind seeing a generation X thread- i am not sure what exctly that covers in terms of years. I was born in 69 to hippie parents here in seattle and we lived an extremely unconventional lifestyle. my parents were swingers grew weed in the closet rode motorcycles in the early 70's then hit LIFESPRING SHAKLEE and HEALTH FOOD we were eating protein shakes 3 times a day YUCK i can still remember the ROMAN MEAL WITH NO SUGAR and the CORN MEAL MUSH with no sugar. My parents dropped acid at Sabbath and Zeppelin Shows and i can remember the sweet smell of Ganja at such an early age wafting thru our suburban house. we drove around in a plymouth duster until mom wrecked it after eating shrooms and swerving to hit a dog. she ran into the paperboys shack and was tripping out my sister and i were bloody from the broken glass. nice memory. after that episode you guessed it she became BORN AGAIN and a new phase of life was entered- but not for dad. he was still smokin and playin zeppelin and cream records on the record player when we would get home from church which i hated. one day we went to a rock music seminar in which we were indoctrinated against the subliminal messages from satan in records they played backwards for us like zeppelin 4 stairwayy to heaven and black oak arkansas, elo and queen. i was so scared. we get home and dad has been listening to stairway to heaven right at the crescendo where the satanic voice was played for me an hour earlier. i dreamed of goats heads and devil horns all night that night. you know damn well that they ended up getting divorced a year or two later. but i managed to keep the old family values strong and now you can come over to my house and listen to zeppelin any time you like buddy!

This is a great thread. It sure has brought back some funny memories. The nice thing is that so many are contributing all they wacky things - I could never have thought of them all myself!

The Edge of Night was better, by far.

I did watch that some in high school and enjoyed it. Adam and Nicole-- one of the soap love stories of all time.

I had a friend whose parents used to go away and leave the teens in charge of the house. They always left with the stern warning "no parties".

Of course a huge party always ensued. The parents always knew there had been a party cause their pet cockatoo would be saying SH_T and DAMMIT for days after.

Anyway - how about Francie - does anyone remember Francie?

I mentioned on an earlier thread that Francie was my first foray into Barbies since I couldn't have white dolls. My brothers and cousins liked her boobs.

Wow - reminds me of what a friend told me about her parents. They were hippies too, and her father trashed her baby book by rolling joints on it - got it all stained with resin.

This was so bizarre to me - my parents were as straight-laced as they come. But then again, my dad was a closet alcoholic and somewhat of a recluse, so one has to wonder which is worse?

Also - do any of you remember - in the Barbie Doll family - Scooter (Barbie's cousin) AND Tutti?

HA! Yes, I had all of them. Wasn't there a little boy, too, that was Tutti's buddy?

Why is it the guys are always doing stuff like that. Did you see where they taped firecrackers on GI Joe's plastic unmentionable parts?

One more: Those were the days when you could go to the local feed store and buy saltpeter(potassium nitrate) by the pound. We used to mix it with sugar and then light it....big time smoke bomb.

anybody play the Strat-o-Matic Baseball or Football games?

And how about some of the Urban legends of our time? Remember the song "Roller Coaster"?...there was a scream on it that was supposedly of a woman getting murdered in the studio as the song was being taped....
