Here is a collection of links to information you need about Nuclear, Biological & Chemical Warfare- ABC to us oldtimers.
This second thread refines & extracts more links and information you may need. Get it beforehand!
Chances of survival are increased by knowledge and understanding of the capabilities and limitations of each class of weapons.
It is my hope that those of you who have further knowledge, or links, regarding this will add to it-- and pass it along the 'net.

Re: expiration date for the filters on the mask.
The filters have a seal on them. As long as the seal is unbroken they'll last decades at least. If it's your mask, the seal can be broken and ya'll can practice fitting and breathing in fresh air w/o loss of capacity. Just put the cap on tight when you're done.
The active component in the mask is activated carbon. If you're handy with taking things apart and putting them back together, or improvising...activated carbon is regenerated by boiling in water for say ~30 min for most things.

Thinking Ahead: Should Smallpox Become Reality, What Do We Do?
Good God! Let us know how you both are doing!
I assume it's anthrax? It's nasty stuff, but treatable, and they are better now with managing some of the side-effects.
It seems to me your story would qualify for a post in breaking news!
Bloody diarrhea is indeed a symptom to be alarmed about, especially in the young or very old- fluid loss & loss of blood volume... short of starting an IV drip, about all you can do at home is drink isotonic fluids ( Gatoraide ) and raise hell with your Doc. If it doesn't abate, head for the nearest Emergency Room. A good "in the field" indicator of how well the antibiotic is working is that within a few hours or a day of starting it, you "are amazed at how bad you felt a few hours ago."
Keep us advised- and consider posting your story. You don't have to be Hemingway to tell Who, What, When, Where, & Why- just lay the story out as it happened.

No fooling. Especially when I read about what can happen with intestinal anthrax via the New England Journal of Medicine and other places. Seems this type isn't even on the radar screen here because they think it can only be transmitted by eating food. I think in my case I got the spores through my nose, but swallowed them down into my stomach right away.
Here's a little more on smallpox:
