Thanks. It took a few minutes for my brain to work.

But the Pentagon wasn't too pleased when SpaceImaging released pictures of Groom Lake AFB though...

"We probably won't kill many but they wont be able to use that camp for a while."
Yeah but it will keep them underground until we are on top of them by whatever insertion means we use.

Certain combat veterans of Vietnam already encountered these type of bunkers and vanquished most of their inhabitants -- the guys who did it were called "tunnel rats". I'm certain our armed forces have men who are just as ready to take on the successors to the NVA in their ratholes.

The problem I have is that these look like scruffy piles of rock. The inhabitants can filter away...and indeed I would be surprised if they are still occupied by a single human being. With all the huffing and puffing and "oh boy we're gonna get these guys", they'd have to be idiots to stay there, even if they were there to begin with.

Agreed
I'm looking forward to seeing the before/after graphics when the bird sweeps over again...if you understand what I mean

They knew the 9-11 attacks were coming, they knew the US would respond....I've no doubt they've made plans long in advance to get to new areas and leave the old ones bobby-trapped

I think that is what W means when he says "smoke them out and put them on the run"

Well, I guess it depends on how they marked off the 1/4 square mile. I live on a piece that is 1/4 mile on a side...that is 40 acres. So I guess 40 acres is 1/4 mile squared and 160 acres is 1/4 squared miles. I think your interpretation is correct for the way it's used in this article.

Bin Laden is not likely to hang around, being that close to the Pakistani border. Being realistic, if there's a large heli-pad, there's a helicopter or small plane capable of getting him to safety.
However, assuming this is a valid target, a bunch of high-volume pumps and pipes are needed. Build a reservoir system on top & do a high-pressure flush - appropriate term, besides.
At the peak of the flooding, have delayed charges detonate for a hydraulic over-pressure effect.
If the dam has a generator associated with it, throw a few mega-watts down the flooded tubes for good measure.
Repeat as necessary.
After the water exits, down hill, flood the lower drainage points with fuel & turn the tunnels into super-heated chimneys. Check the exit of the smoke / heat for missed entrances.
Repeat as necessary.
If it's necessary to enter the tunnels, have the locals take the point. Mulahs first.
Don't waste any 'friendly' lives or ammo; that's stupid.
Carpet-bomb the region to leave a lasting impression.
If any resistance is given from the local village, blow the dam.

This is just the last post so no significance as to who is directed to. Nothing against anyone here but I anm given to wonder how many of the blood thirsty warriors have served in the military? Some I am sure, but I wonder how many of the others would crap their drawers at any thing real?

Land measurement...
Some on this thread, I believe, are confusing a quarter of a square mile (which is what the article says), with a quarter of a mile squared, which is entirely different.
The correct figure is, as several have pointed out, 160 acres. One square mile is 640 acres; a quarter of that is 160 acres. To check, 5,280 feet times 5,280 feet is 27,878,400 square feet. Divide by the number of square feet in an acre, 43,560, and you get 640 acres in a square mile, thus 160 acres in a quarter of a square mile.
On the other hand, a quarter mile squared, that is, a square tract measuring a quarter of a mile (or 1,320 feet) on each side, would indeed be 40 acres: 1,320 feet times 1,320 feet equals 1,742,400 square feet, divided by 43,560 square feet (1 acre) is 40 acres. But the aticle says a quarter of a square mile, not a quarter of a mile squared.
