Pledge to the Earth Proposed for Council [L.A. City Council]
Los Angeles Daily News | 09-27-2001 | Dominic Berbeo

Councilwoman Ruth Galanter, backed by six other members, proposed Wednesday that the City Council recite a "Pledge to the Earth" in addition to the Pledge of Allegiance at the beginning of its meetings.

The new verse would state: "I pledge allegiance to the Earth on which I stand, one world, one people, undivided, with food, shelter and justice for all."

"By adding this Pledge to the Earth, we join thousands of schoolchildren who already acknowledge that no matter where we live on this Earth, we share the same dreams and hopes for a better future, and we need to rely on each other to create it," she said.

Council members Hal Bernson, Dennis Zinc, Eric Garcetti, Jan Perry, Ed Reyes and Mark Ridley-Thomas joined Galanter in introducing the motion which would need eight votes to pass. The motion went to the Rules and Elections Committee, which will consider it before referring it back to the full council. No dates have been set for those actions.

Galanter said she first heard the pledge used at school in Westchester, and that it is used by many schoolchildren in Los Angeles.

Councilman Nate Holden said the motion is a "feel-good" move, and such a pledge should not be compared with the Pledge of Allegiance.

"If it makes (Galanter) feel good, then we'll give her two or three other pledges," he said. "I think that she really wants to save the Earth ... except for Playa Vista."

Galanter has alienated conservationists by her strong support for the massive Playa Vista development, which has been criticized as despoiling marshland.

Before the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the council recited the Pledge of Allegiance only at the first meeting of each month. Since the attacks, however, the council has decide to open every meeting with the pledge.

And "I pledge allegiance to the government money on which I stand, one check, one people, undivided, with food, shelter and free money for all."

No big surprise. That's the same City Council that once declared Los Angeles to be a city of sanctuary for illegal aliens.

This seems a case of having way too much time on their hands.

They should watch that footage of the Palestinians celebrating the WTC/Pentagon attacks. Lots of kids in that celebration.

Ah, California. The Land Of Fruits And Nuts.

Seriously, these folks are putting themselves in line for a real whuppin', come election time. Angelenos aren't likely to go for this sort of mushy socialist embrace-the-world multiculturalism while corpses and rubble from the Twin Towers are being cleared away. Quite a lot of them are originally from New York, or have relatives and friends here.

But the trendy lefties of our nation are apparently incapable of realizing that the time has come for them to sit down and shut up. Ultimately, that might be to the good.

"That's the same City Council that once declared Los Angeles to be a city of sanctuary for illegal aliens."

I thought that was Santa Monica?...Santa Ana?....

The L.A. Council did order the LAPD not to cooperate with the INS, when, for example, they arrested an illegal alien for committing a crime...

Santa Ana is now "majority latino" (actually majority illegal alien) and has debated giving illegals the vote ("we must be inclusive, and after all, they must live under our ordinances---shouldn't they be able to vote for the Council members?")

Santa Monica (I believe) declared itself to be a haven for "the homeless", which resulted in a gigantic colony of bums in the parks and the lawn in front of City Hall, publicly urinating and defecating, and so on. I think they eventually reversed their decision...over Martin Sheen's "dead body".

we share the same dreams and hopes for a better future,

Frankly...except perhaps in the broadest of terms (we hope for a future according to our individual fantasies), this is untrue. How many of you dream of remembering the layout of electrons in various atoms? How many of you dream of blowing up a car in a place crowded with people who have done you no harm?

People are indeed different, although the most obvious external markers may not be reliable signs of internal goals.

I recall that they did that also. I can't remember exactly when they did that sanctuary resolution thing other than it was in the late 1980's, but I sure remember some of the Council members, such as Joel Wachs, backtracking like crazy before they finally passed another resolution recinding it because of the uproar it caused.
