Constantinople, USA or How to Defeat a Jihad
self-written ^ | September 22,2001 | Matt Dedinas

Many in this country right now are looking to the Middle East and some believe that the fanatacism of the Muslims who wish this country harm somehow makes them unstopable. "How can we beat them?" is sometimes asked. It can easily be done. And we can look back in history for examples. In the West, typically, we look to the Battle of Tours, but the true decisive defeat of jihad came a generation earlier, before the gates of the Queen of Cities, often neglected by modern historians.

When the first wave of Islamic conquest burst forth from the Arabian desert about 633AD they seemed unstopable. From 633AD to 711AD, a span of four generations, they took all of North Africa, Syria, Israel, Iraq and the entire Persian Empire. In 711AD the force of jihad invaded Spain and chased the Visigoths all the way up into the northern mountains of the Iberian Peninsula. The fire of jihad had consumed half the world, how could it be stopped?

More than half of the listed territory had been raped away from the Eastern Roman Empire, which was now reduced to Anatolia and Greece. The 'Umayyids, the ruling dynasty of all Islam, cast their eyes upon the great city of Constantinople, the New Rome. They had conquered all of Byzantium's provinces, why not now take the city itself?

In 717AD the 'Umayyid prince, Maslama, marched on the city and was supported by a vast fleet. But Emperor Leo III, the Isaurian, was ready. The crafty Anatolian soldier-emperor had stockpiled plenty of supplies in the great city, had built up his army, and had copious amounts of Greek Fire(napalm, basically).

Leo met Maslama with his own determination. He used superior naval skill to his advantage. The winter of 717-718AD was exceedingly harsh by the standards of the usually mild Bosporus. The warriors of Allah, usually so scrupulous with their diet, WERE REDUCED TO CANNIBALISM.

In the Spring of 718, with the help of Bulgarian allies, the Eastern Roman Army finally forced Maslama to withdraw. This was more than a simple setback for the jihad of Islam, it was a total defeat. No Muslim army would assail the walls of Constantinople for nearly 700 years after this. This, combined with the defeat at Tours in 732AD, were psychological turning points after which the Muslim Armies began to retreat from Europe, rather than advance into it. After Constantinople and Tours the Muslims took to spreading their faith largely by peaceful means. It would be centuries before Muslim armies would march forth to spread their faith by the sword again.

Jihad is a psychological phenomenon. On how to defeat it, we merely need to take a lesson from Leo III the Isaurian. We must show that our resolve is stronger, that our faith is stronger, that our military might is stronger. What we need is to inflict a Constantinople or Tours style defeat upon them. To replace the idea of invincible jihad with the idea that jihad only brings death and destruction. And we can do it. Jihad is sort of a flash in the pan thing which goes in and out of fashion throughout Islamic History. The traditions of Bushido and Prussian militarism ran much deeper in their respective societies, yet, after the defeat of 1945, neither of these traditions has been in use for nearly three generations now. The idea of jihad has been beaten in the past by men with resources far inferior to our own. All we have to do is harden ourselves and fight the good fight. We can and will do it again.

Overwhelming force?

We're taking the fight to them, they're not bringing it to us.

I see this thing as it's us or them. Nobody should rule out anything, including tactical nukes.

We don't agree on much, but we do agree on this. Collin Powell is a mistake, he should never publically take something off the table as "will not use".

Powell's proper reply would have been "That is a decision to be made by the Secretary of Defense and approved by the President, not to be made by the Secretary of State."

"Collin Powell is a mistake, he should never publically take something off the table as "will not use"."

The headline on the Colin Powell article is misleading. Powell did NOT take tactical nukes off the table. When asked about nuclear weaponry, Powell said that he "didn't think they would be necessary." That's his OPINION. Opinions can change. We're not there yet.

Plus, it's not up to him. It's up to the President.

So it's liberal editors putting out misleading headlines? Didn't they use to call that something back in WW2?

>>>>>To replace the idea of invincible jihad with the idea that jihad only brings death and destruction<<<<<<<

This is true, but response is more complex than that.

One must understand duplicity, islamic way.
the starting point is to understand average Muslim behaviour in Dar -ul -Islam( where they are majority and impose their rule on everybody else), Dar -ul -Harb (clash-points, more than 26 countries, from Bosnia on the West, Sudan to the south and Phillipines to the East)
When Muslims are in majority, they terrorize everybody else ( christians, hindus, animists, you name it) . No minority rights, no religius rights, only right to suffer and convert to Islam. Read more
When in minority, they play victim game (star example are kosovo Albanians", victimhood "for fun and Prophet") and exploit stupidity of democratic societies.

Western Hemisphere is refered to as Dar-ul -Kufr. There, Muslims use western democratic norms to propell their cause. Note "eccumenical calls" by stupid Christians who snatched the muslim lie that "islam is religion of peace". Yes, it is religion of peace, once they slaughter dhimmis as cattle. Religion of peace, as can be seen in Sudan, Kashmir and other places where this serenity is excercised.

Byzantine empire fell because Turks exploited internal weaknesses of Empire. American Empire should go to the crash course of "hitory for dummies", before it is too late.

So far, it does not look good. By giving name to the operation "Infinite Justice" US showed its ignorance. And ignorance in war is paid by blood of its own soldiers.

Understanding the way Muslims think AND utilizing JUST FORCE is the way to win.

You are right about that, they'd use nukes on us without pity. We need to show them today that Jihad=Death for alot of Muslims with no gain.

I do understand their thinking of Dar-al-Harb(House of War) and Dar-es-Salaam(House of Peace) aka Dar-al-Islam. This thinking, however, is very old. It goes back to the days when Islam was unified under one caliph and the Christian world was a morass of warring states. In clinging to this thought, the Muslim is living in the past.

You are right that the Turks eventually did conquer the Eastern Roman Empire. But the gist of my article is that the failure of the Arabic siege of Constantinople in 718AD made that city psychologically unconquerable in the minds of Muslims and they did not try and take it until the Turkish Sultan Beyazit made the attempt in 1397AD and it was not taken until Mehmet the Conqueror took it in 1453AD. From 717AD up to 1397AD is nearly seven centuries. Leo the Isaurian taught the Muslims a lesson. And it lived on in their minds for centuries. We need to teach them a similar lesson today.

I hear ya'. And you know what? There's no enemy like a former friend who was betrayed. I hope my Guard Unit goes over there, or at least takes volunteers to go.

I was thinking of making some call's Monday to the State of Texas and see if they will consider using volunteers to do leg work, from checking out if there have been any small planes sold to arabs in the last six years or so, tracking sales slips, typing, paperwork, guarding power grids, anything.

I want to feel useful and not helpless.
