What The Terrorists Saw - Jeff Jacoby
Jewish World Review ^ | 22 Sept 2001 | Jeff Jacoby

Posted on 09/22/2001 5:18:30 AM PDT by Uncle Fud

THIS was George Bush's warning to the international terrorists and their sponsors: "The United States will be firm with terrorists. We will not make concessions.... If we find states supplying money, weapons, training, identification, documents, travel, or safe haven for terrorists, we will respond. Our aim is to demonstrate to these countries that supporting terrorism is not cost-free.... We will bring terrorists to justice. We will ... identify, track, apprehend, prosecute, and punish terrorists. Terrorism is crime, and terrorists must be treated as criminals."

That muscular vow wasn't uttered after last week's atrocities. It was made in November 1988 by then-Vice President George H.W. Bush

Thanks, Unc. I haven't read Jeff for quite awhile. I see he's still got a way with words, as well as ideas. Great read.

The article is right on target and Jeff Jacoby is an excellant writer. It is time to Eliminate all terrorists around the world in a forceful and lasting way. Let's not "ever hit the snooze button again".

Absolutely. I'm afraid that a fair share of the blame for the current crisis must be laid at the desk of GHWB for his failure to finish the gulf war.

Blame doesn't change a thing.... Our backs are against the wall now....our response must now be overwhelming, complete, and forever vigilant.

We are the biggest & badest dog on the block....time to establish a world-wide fear of this dog!

Yes an excellent article. I hope we don't make the mistakes we've been making for the past two decades.

None of these outrages aroused the fury of the US government.

The fury of the U.S. Government isn't aroused until the people of the U.S. are aroused. We are now aroused thus the government is responding. All I've got to say is... IT'S ABOUT DAMN TIME!

Why stop there? Why not blame G-d for having created a world that led to a Saddam in the first place? It would make about as much sense.

As much as you would have liked the US to invade Iraq, don't forget history. The Gulf War had a coalition of forces. The premise for the coalition was to remove Iraq from Kuwait. It wasn't to remove Saddam from Iraq. Perhaps it should have been, but then, that's not what the coalition agreed to. If the US had exceeded the terms of the agreement, it would make the possibility dim of being able to put together something like that in the future. People are reluctant to trust those who don't stick to the terms of an agreement.

All this and more the vicious men saw. And they concluded that America was rich but cowardly...

Hmmm. The same conclusion reached by BM on P.I.

Great article, one that deserves continuous bumping.

We could not rely on a "coalition" to do what had to be done then, and we should not rely on one now.
