BUSH APPOINTS PRO-ABORTION 'CATHOLIC' TO HEAD HOME SECURITY
WASHINGTON, September 21, 2001 (LSN.ca) - In the wake of the recent terrorist attacks in the United States, President George Bush announced last night the creation of a Cabinet-level position to head the new Office of Homeland Security. In a great disappointment to pro-lifers, Bush named notoriously pro-abortion Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge, to head the office.
Matt Abbott, director of public affairs for America's Pro-Life Action League told LifeSite, "If Ridge refuses to ensure the security of the most helpless citizens of his state - the unborn - how can he be expected to safeguard security for the nation?" Abbott also commented that Ridge is "a self-proclaimed Catholic while maintaining his strident pro-abortion position. What kind of principles does a person like that have? It makes you uncertain of such a person's leadership qualities."

How do you justify the right to life for some if there is no such thing for all humans? The only way to do it once you start dividing between humans who are and who aren't human enough, is to rely on force.
Janet Reno and Jack Kavorkian just didn't think of using a jet plane.
I don't oppose it in the case of rape, incest, life of the mother, or other early term cases where the decision should be left to the parents as regards birth defects. I also support embryonic stem cell research.
On the other hand, I oppose it past the first trimester, but have problems with some of the laws pro-life forces wish to pass. I respect those whose opinions are more stringent than mine, except the extremist wing mentioned in my first post in this thread.
No, I'm not looking to turn this into an abortion debate. Suffice it to say I generally support the pro-life position, but those who are so fanatical about it as to exploit national tragedies or damn a man heading up this new federal agency because of his positions turn me away from giving it much support.
You should, it might force some people to think about what they are saying
>I'll say it again. ABORTIONS AND INFANTICIDES HAVE BEEN DONE FROM TIME IMMEMORIAL. GOD HAS NOT NUKED ANY COUNTRIES BECAUSE OF THAT EVER
Exactly. Abortion, like war is relative to humans. God didn't tell anybody one way or the other what to do. Humans do what they will, and God will judge us, one by one. I find it amusing that some people somehow profess to know what God wants, whether it's waging war or whatever.
You don't hear any of us running around saying the Taliban and the radical elements of the Right-to-Life movement could see eye-to-eye on a few things, because that would be a tacky/cruel thing to say. For people to be bring up somebody's abortion stance when it has no bearing on the matter is ridiculous.
But keep on. Drive away those who might otherwise support the cause with your
demands for ideological purity.
I do not know what you are, but you cannot possibly harbor such sentiments and still be pro-life.
if that happens, you can blame the people saying we need to go after all the Arabs and Moslems in America, because that's where this will start, and some here are misguided enough to think that if all the Arabs and Moslems were rounded up and sent somewhere, that things would go back to normal and they'd stop there.
Nope. If they start persecuting innocent Arab and Islamic Americans, Christians will be next, and we all know it.
While I would have/might have opposed Ridge for VP or another Cabinet job previously, he is probably quite well-suited for THIS postion.
Let us hope & pray that he is!
He won't have any purvue over abortions.
He is an attractive enough human being in many ways that BOTH George W. Bush and Robert Dole would have possibly chosen Ridge for their VP had he not ben pro-abortion.
Dole was close to asking (now ex-)Sen. Connie Mack of FL. as his VP, BTW, had he not called jack Kemp.
Dole was more comfortable with Sen. Mack, who was po-life and whom he knew well.
"I guess that we need to all be so fearful of the future, that we are paralized to do anything now... right ? "
No, I'm not suggesting that. I think that the homeland security makes perfect sense today. I also see it as a potential weapon against liberty in the wrong hands some day in the future.
I don't agree, and as somebody that is pro-life, I'll tell you why. I don't want ANY MORE GOVERNMENT CONTROL OVER OUR LIVES THAN IS NECESSARY.
I don't know how to make it anymore clear than that. We let the government starting making decisions based along religious lines, one way or the other we are going to get screwed in the end. It is quite simple. If the government feels it's entitled to remove the choice of abortion, then it will feel it's entitled to remove other choices it deems wrong as well. And then we are screwed.
Catchy. Three letters less than "President". Headline writers will love it.
Murder is illegal. Should the government give us the legal "choice" to commit murder? How about rape?
As far as Ridge is concerned, what he believes or doen't is between him and GOD. This cabinet ost has absoltely NOTHING what so ever with abortion. He can NOT make any sort of end run about that ; it is beyond his venue.
For others, who are worried about the " what ifs " of the future, I say, we better worry about the here and now, at this particular time. If we dond't, and concentrate on the extranious, then we might as well surrender to the Taliban.
We are long overdue for an extended theolgical meditation of what peace really is. Many on this thread would be shocked -- I trust.
