I am a Christian, but even before this tragedy I was seriously disillusioned with the "church" as a whole. Where are the churches now?? Scrolling across the bottom of our television screens are names of companys and actors, who've donated millions of dollars to this cause. Where are the churches? Falwell and Robertson, where's the money?? Talk is cheap if action is not taken.
Firefighters, mayors, police, and the like have all been hailed as heroes. And rightly they are. But again I ask, where is the church? Is it out there, and we're just not hearing about it. Or is it truly still asleep after the wake-up call we've had?
If you've heard of anything the church has done through this, please post it here. I'd love to know the church is not as complacent in this time as it seems to be. Christ's church should be the light of the world all the time, but especially at a time like this....WHERE IS THE CHURCH?
First, look at your community. Befere 9/11 were there not many religous-based compassionate ministries, such as hospitals, clinics, soup kitchens, and thrift shops?
Second is the response of individuals. Some people contribute just because they are good and decent, but many do it because they reflect the love of Jesus Christ.
There church is very much in the forefront. The church isn't always easily recognizable.
As for the second, I am soooo glad that you are right.
Shalom,
DrMike

Somehow post #4 had a open HTML format tag that caused subsequent posts to appear in the same narrow column format as the article about the Baptists.
My effort to fix that open tag made things WORSE.
Fortunately, intervention from the Admin Moderator resolved my error, but left some of the posts "out of order."
I am still looking for exactly what I read.
Here is a post that talks about it, though, from Priest Dies While Helping Victims In New York Tragedy:
"I read a few stories about the firefighters who arrived on the scene after the second tower was hit. The Archdiocese had issued an emergency call for priests all over the City, and groups of these firefighters stood outside and were given the Last Rites before entering the buildings, knowing that they would probably never come out alive."

Perhaps the following will help to explain why we're not seeing the charitable work of many Christian churches and organizations in the news:
Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in Heaven . . . But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly.
(Matt. 6:1, 3&4) NKJV
None of us is perfect, but many of us Christians have a slogan we try to live by:
What about Barbara Lee (D-CA)? Falwell has few supporters and no political power I can see. Lee does. I suspect this constant harping on Falwell, who every left wing host loves to put on TV, is nothing more than a diversion to distract attention from those in the Democrat Party who agree with Lee and from Lee herself.
What is your opinion of Lee's vote? How do you feel about a person who sat on a commission set up by the Communist Party USA sitting in our Congress? Do you think Barbara Lee was right to give information to the Communist government of Grenada? Do you think Hillary's friendship with Ms Lee should preclude Hillary for sitting in the Senate? Do you think Hillary owes us an explanation?
And...btw...welcome to Free Republic.
