'Don't ask me to kill ... or to die'
I am a 19-year-old college student. I joined the Oregon National Guard two months before I turned 18.
I write about the possibility of war. I am still in shock about everything that has happened. I want the people responsible to pay for their crimes.
And those are the only people who should pay.
If we go to war, it will be my generation that will have to go. America will ask us to give up our dreams and to die for our country. We will be asked to leave our loved ones, to leave our educations and to die alongside our brothers, sisters and friends.
Please don't ask us to do this. I am not afraid to defend my country, but I am afraid for my country. Enough people have died already. Please don't ask me to kill others or to die myself in the name of revenge.

Reminds me of an incident that I participated in at Ft. Knox almost 20 years ago. Since Ft. Knox is a basic training post, it was easy to get details from the Reception Center and some Basic Training units for various jobs. As an NCO, I needed some extra manpower one day, and headed over to the Reception Center. There I obtained an even dozen raw recruits in fresh fatigues and haircuts. During a break in the day's work I overheard one of these young men telling another that he had enlisted for the National Guard, and that he never intended to go into combat. I questioned him further, and he stated that he was a "concientous objector". Upon returning to the Reception Center I made a point of making this fact known to the duty officer. He called me the next day to tell me that after further questioning they had sent this kid home with a General Discharge. Can we do the same for this young lady?

"Please don't ask me to die . . . in the name of revenge."
This is not about revenge, it is about protecting ourselves from further attacks.

Wrong, she ain't a wing nut wearing the moiniker "Private First Class". Airman (see no time for Sgt's rerun with Andy Griffin for proper way to say it :o), Airman first Class and Senior Airman then Sgt as I experienced it. The only privates ya'll see in the Air Force were in the females shower......
Damn coward's getting passed the recuriters ????...... We took our turn in the barrel now it's this generations and I'd suspect she's gonna last about 10 minutes in her first unit. She'll also be the loudest one to brag that she "served" later .............what a croc of crap.
To many good troops out there to worry about this one IMHO. The peer thang will weed her out IMHO.
Stay Safe Bert.

" This sounds like a kid who should have had a relative on board one of those four airplanes."
What a horrible thing to say? What TheOtherHarry was trying to get across to you is that, Hey pal, war is hell. You haven't got a clue what motivates heroes, and you're a danger to your country. Those people died for brats like Miss "I don't want to die". Clue: NOBODY WANTS TO DIE.

"Yeah, I was a little general..."So was I! Pleased to meet you. We little generals should stick together. ;-)

Worse than you thought. She signed the letter as being from Pendelton - that is WAY out in Eastern Oregon, in the most conservative part of the state. Portland I would have expected, too. Not Pendelton.
She should be offered a dishonorable dischage immediately.

I say give her a dishonorable discharge and then begin billing her, monthly, for her college tuition expenses.

I don't know if you have seen the HBO show 'Band of Brothers'.
It is about a group of soldies in the 101 Airborne during WWII.
They have interviewed several of the real participants during the shows.
One ex- soldier stated that in his small town ( Mid-West as I remember) 3 young men couldn't join, got 4F deferments. Two of the three committed suicide because of the shame.
And now we have this crop of young 'Americans'.
I heard of an incident in a local school today. I won't relate the details for fear of starting an ugly thread war. What I will say is that there and many hyphenated Americans that look at the WTC disaster with indifference.

Dishonorable discharge
NOW!
If I remember right, it's been a long time; statements like this in time of war constitute treason.
