'Don't ask me to kill ... or to die' (This is our Military?)
Lar Larson Show KXL Radio - Portland Ore | 9/17/01 | LAURA VILLANI (PFC Oregon National Guard)

'Don't ask me to kill ... or to die'

I am a 19-year-old college student. I joined the Oregon National Guard two months before I turned 18.

I write about the possibility of war. I am still in shock about everything that has happened. I want the people responsible to pay for their crimes.

And those are the only people who should pay.

If we go to war, it will be my generation that will have to go. America will ask us to give up our dreams and to die for our country. We will be asked to leave our loved ones, to leave our educations and to die alongside our brothers, sisters and friends.

Please don't ask us to do this. I am not afraid to defend my country, but I am afraid for my country. Enough people have died already. Please don't ask me to kill others or to die myself in the name of revenge.

LAURA VILLANI, Private first class, Pendleton

I guess she thought she thought the deal was that she would get a nice uniform, some college tuition and some beer money in return for some weekends in the guard. Well, no one can make her kill, but we can make her die if she deserts in time of war.

She should have read the fine print before she signed up. TWIT!

Portland. Doesn't surprise me.

Well, don't shoot all Portlanders. I was out there yesterday and saw a "protesting group" (who was written up, protesting the "war"). This group apparently "marched" and then also grouped in a part of the "Park Blocks", where they milled around and talked. I sat around for a while and watched them. It was really nothing much, actually.

Now, there might have been a news report about a *larger group* who was meeting at Pioneer Square (a large square in the center of Portland). That group was sponsored by some Christian organization and was in support of the President. It was a very much larger group (it looked like).

I'm sure you have a mixture out here in Portland, similar to other places.

Portland is a nice town. Let's hope it stays that way and no planes fly into the buildings around here. I'm sure that's probably one main reason that most people will be supporting Bush. They have some "enlightened self-interest" in doing that. That does tend to change people's perspective, in a lot of instances. Israel has been dealing with this sort of thing for a long time, but it took the World Trade Buildings collapsing for the U.S. to react to terrorism in a decisive way. I would say this is the start to a long war with terrorism.

One of my husband's co-workers, an ex-Marine, said we were going to see this attitude.

"It doesn't sound like she understands what being in the military is all about. "

No, she doesn't. Many people may take a crash course before this is all over.

Put the women in front, in the first wave of attack. When the public sees the mangled female bodies, we'll return to a real army. As the WTC event showed, Americans have to see the carnage before they wise up.

Notice she's a "college student". That should answer a LOT of questions. Education? WHAT education?

Dear Laura,
There is something I don't understand.
What is a nineteen-year old doing in the third grade?

You don't know what National Guard means?
You should have asked your teacher before you joined.
Oh? You thought it was just a neat way to get a check for doing almost nothing?
Sorry Sweetie.

Make sure you have clean socks when you go into battle.

My husband served for many years with the 82nd Airborne from Fort Bragg...we watched today on television as they showed those brave Airborne troops...I know my hubby wishes he was still with them now, so he could be able to fight if called upon..

. My husband spent ten years in the active army, and then went into a Reserve unit, and his time totaled in the Reserves is 17 years....a week ago today, just one day before the WTC tragedy, he signed his papers for retirement...we dont know now, if those papers have even been sent through the chain of command...so officially, we guess he is still part of the Reserves, at least until he gets official orders that he is retired...but he is willing to go now, today, if he is called...

The Commander of the Oregon NG was being interviewed and he read the letter on the air.

What did he think about the letter?

I agree...

Someone once asked, to have the most effective possible fighting force, is it necessary that we have women in combat roles?

The answer is no, it is not "necessary".

IF women are in forward combat roles, will that in and of itself cause our fighting force to be less effective?

The answer is yes. The unavoidable issue of biology and hormones by itself in mixed units will suffice - let alone whether a 130 lb woman is gonna be able to haul my sorry 225 lb ass out of a firezone.

The warriors should be men. After all, we cannot have kids (children and family being the greatest blessing one can have on earth) - let us do what we can do well - FIGHT.

No, they haven't changed at all. I was in until 98 and both times my unit deployed in that time period the "pucker factor" went sky high. These weren't reservists either. Mostly guys on a two year stint for college $$$. You'd hear that a lot- I just joined for the money, I didn't want to go to war. When we used to ask these guys why they chose a combat MOS?- "I wanted to shoot guns and stuff".

It's the young people today. When I was a kid we used to dream of the day when we could enlist.
Check out this thread on DU to see what I mean about today's youth. They're busy bashing the name Operation Noble Eagle. It's a disgrace. With countrymen like these- who needs enemies?
