I am disgusted.
Tonight at Macalester College in Saint Paul, MN, we (the Macalester Catholics) had mass in the basement of our Chapel. Since this place is very liberal (I'm here just for the physics department), I was afraid that during the time for prayer petitions, they'd say something stupid about the WTC attack.
I wasn't disappointed.
After one girl prayed for those of Islamic faith who were being unfairly persectuted, another girl came out on a peacenik tear. She said all kinds of inane things, the best three being "We shouldn't respond with violence", "We should fight terrorism with love", and "I'm not blaming those people who died, but we should see what the U.S. did to provoke these attacks." I, who had to stop myself from shaking in anger, then explained why we have to fight back "after we hug them, they will stab us in the back" and prayed for our country, our President, and for those who wanted peace, because I will not agree with them.
At this point, the girl broke into tears and kept crying throughout the Mass. Even better, four other people prayed for "an appropriate response", "so that nationalism doesn't get out of control and do something worse than the attacks", "the innocent people fleeing their homes in Afghanistan", and "the country of Afghanistan". I had had enough, and, fortuntately after that, no one said anything else so petition time ended. The rest of the Mass was uneventful, even though crying girl announced "I normally don't cry this much."
Usually after Mass, we share snacks and socialize about college life. I didn't stay tonight. I had to get out of there, and I really don't want to go back there next week. I don't feel sorry for making that girl cry either.
These sentiments are a bit half thought. Perhaps its better to elaborate than imply.
1st on the statement we should fight terrorism with love. I firmly agree that in times of lawlessness, love will tend to grow cold, but our goal is to persevere in love. Now before anybody believes they understand my meaning, understand that love doesn't imply a touchy feely, good to know you, feeling. I also love justice and recognize that the parties responsible for the terror attacks should and will be held accountable if we are able to fulfill our loving intentions. It also implies that other innocent parties exist in the world and if these heinous individuals fail to repent, which I suspect is quite likely, then not only might the individual terrorists but groups associated with the terrorists are to be held accountable for their actions. The fight might be quite vicious in order to properly display true love for righteousness. Righteousness doesn't encourage injustice or unrighteousness.
2nd misguided quote: "We shouldn't respond with violence." Actually, the second quote and justification should be reasoned prior to reaching the conclusion of the first quote. Upon sufficient reflection, a truly loving person will recognize that violent actions might be the only true avenue to manifest a true love.
The 3rd quote. Similar to placing the cart before the horse in the first 2 quotes, the speaker seeks self-evaluation before judging others. This is admirable where the others have valid and sound criticism. But in the case of the WTC, it's rather obvious that the victims were indiscriminatly targeted as simply being associated with the "US". Under such criterion, probably every person on the planet might be grouped for condemnation. The person is displaying an adolescent grasp of judgment. The entire issue worthy of disgust is the mass death and destruction of those at the WTC, not whether the US has ever done anything to prompt terrorist activity. Even considering the issue lessons risk for those who promote terror.
Proper guidance would be to encourage her to love and persevere in love, but not to encourage those who reject love, especially when violent action is being levied. True love doesn't imply impotence.
I would love to personally perform a Columbian necktie on each and every one involved, no matter how remotely, in the actions of 911.
I would love to have available a shooting gallery stocked with ragheads preaching hate for the great satan.
I would love to anihilate and pave-over Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Libya, and parts of Palestine.
I would love to silence the voices of those who would blame Americans for inviting the violence of 911.
I agree. The line in the sand has been drawn. Do you read the Catholic Newspaper Our Sunday Visitor? There is an article in this weeks issue slamming the democratic party up one page and down the other. The title is called "How can a Catholic be a democrat?" I'm with you--Time to clean house! We have an excellent opportunity to do so right now.
By the way, I prefer to call them the "cumbya catholics" (note small c) as opposed to the "Ava Maria" Catholics.
lol...cute.
You're right. We must not send children.
You're right. We must not send children.
Agree totally, Smed. I ran to our local Catholic mass on 9/11 just after those planes hit and the petitions were equally nauseating. I prayed for "President Bush and his cabinet." No problem with the parishoners. If I could find a Latin mass, I might become a Catholic again.
Another dreadful response from the sheeple: I live on a liberal island off Seattle, and at the supermarket this afternoon, the checker asked casually, "How are you today?" I replied enthusiastically, "Excellent." He stopped checking, looked at me, amazed, and told me that he hadn't heard anything that positive from anyone all day. Most people were down in the dumps about the terrorist strike. I said, "I'm feeling excellent because I know we're in good hands." His eyebrows went up and he commented that I was the most optimistic person he knew. Other people in line were glaring and me and frowning. Their negative attitude seems as frightening as terrorist strikes, because fear is obviously taking over people's lives.
Hawkeye's Girl, those people in your church are running on fear 24/7; it's fueling their wimpy, tearful responses, their attitudes, their beliefs. Remember Franklin Roosevelt's great, great statement: "We have nothing to fear but fear itself." Stay strong and buck up the wimps you know...tell them that you KNOW we can and will win out over terrorism. We're definitely in good hands. Our leaders have the will and the means to win.
Sometimes the young or stupid figure this out. Other times, they don't, and it kills them.
Hey, bite your tongue. You know what GWB said to Hillary!, "I'm not going to shoot a 2 million dollar missile at a 10 dollar tent, and hit a camel in the butt."
Right on, half my relatives are Catholics. They voted for Bill, Hill, and Gore for the most part. Liberals have all that "compassion" with Other Peoples' Money, you know (i.e. robbing producers at gunpoint to give to non-producers, instead of giving the individual his tax money back, to give VOLUNTARILY to charity as God intended). And that other compassion called DNX abortion. It's time for a change....
Felt good when I heard the guns of the USS New Jersey from the shore of Da-Nang
Thanks Gunner!
Too bad those old girls are in mothballs. A USS NJ or MO might come in handy at this time.
You refer to Carthage and the Roman legions of Scipio Africanus.
They also razed the city so that no structure was taller than a man.
The ruins are still visible today (in what is now Tunisia). And nothing grows there...
I am really disappointed in the Romans, to hear that they slaughtered 450,000 of 500,000 people.
At least a quarter of those had to be females under 30 years of age, wouldn't you say? I can't fathom not sending them home with the soldiers (unless the Carthaginian women were all congenitally ugly...). Moreover, children between the ages of 10 and 16 can be used as household slaves.
What a terrific waste. My image of the Romans as thrifty administrators is completely shattered...
If it's us that's so evil, her prayers for fighting evil with love would be better directed at the terrorists than us.....what a narrow minded nitwit....Tell her I said so.
