KABUL, Afghanistan -- Pakistan is to give the Taliban rulers of Afghanistan three days to hand over suspected terrorist Osama bin Laden or face U.S. military action.

The ultimatum comes as Pakistan makes eleventh-hour diplomatic efforts to prevent a military strike in the region.

The "serious" governments understood the concept of mutually-assured destruction. The "serious" governments never attacked the United States and killed this many people.

Those that will give their own lives to kill their enemies are the most dangerous threat to national security. Islamic radicals are the only ones crazy enough to attack with nuclear devices and chemical weapons. Any that are a national security threat must DIE. That's the point of war -- eliminate the threat by force.

Your suggestion is a good one:

... if the $$$ of these people is gone, they won't get any more followers....

Simply yanking the head off of this beast may not be sufficient, as it may grow another- possibly more than one.

Removing its' ability to produce more (reproduce) will have a great long term effect. Therefore, our response should ultimately include removing their 'twig and berries' (family jewels/other assets), along with any others parts received.

bin Laden is a KNOWN terrorist who is supposed to have a personal net worth of 300 MILLION US dollars. Seize and/or freeze all his bank accounts and property worldwide. With modern electronic banking, this shouldn't be any problem at all to accomplish.

Okay hacker dude, lets see you pull it off. The US government has been trying to do this for years. The accounts are not in his name and he doesnt go to the bank and make deposits and withdrawals.

It is obvious, at least to me, that the Taliban is going to protect Bin Laden and therefore won't turn him over to the US. If that happens, we will have NO CHOICE but to destroy the Taliban as we move to kill or capture Bin Laden. Remember, you are dealing with fanatics here that WILL NOT listen to reason. They hide behind and twist Islamic teaching to condone these acts of terror. The ONLY question in my mind is whether Russia and China will stay out of this once we take action to get Bin Laden.

Yea-hah, sneakypete, I think you're wrong boy. So we have to worry about what north korea will do at the 38th parallel, or what China might do in the Taiwan straits if we engage the odious forces of the taliban and binladen. No, I think we have to be concerned about what could or might happen in those international flashpoints, but we shouldn't let the what-ifs paralyze our ability to mount an attack on those who are responsible for the deaths and destruction within the American borders. Can you imagine FDR saying after Pearl Harbor that we couldn't go after the Imperial Japanese Fleet because of the possiblity of having an attack on American shipping by German U-boats? Of course not, that's why your argument is fatuous on it's face. The sneakypete doctrine is a sure prescription for the proliferation of more terrorism. We must reject it.

Very interesting. But the internal problems need to addressed too. Right now, the US is the equivalent of a cancer patient who smokes. Maybe you do want to shut down the externalities like the cigarette factory or the tobacco store. But you also have to nail the cancer cells. There was lots of odd behavior to set these people apart.

See http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A38026-2001Sep15.html.

It's also interesting that it's apparently easier for someone from a Middle Eastern country to get a visa to go to flight school than it is for someone from England, where they had to jump through all kinds of hoops, show they had a home mortgage in England to prove they were going back home (English people are really undesirable compared to what we do let in???). Immigration and visa policy is way nuts here, folks. The barn door's been open too long but it should still be adjusted.

(can't post because of Washington Post restrictions)

"We sincerely hope that the great American people could differentiate between the people of Afghanistan and a handful of fundamentalist terrorists," said a statement from the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA).

If that is the case then let them differentiate, for us, who and where this handful of fundalemtalist terrorist are. Otherwise, get out of the way.

That walking breathing socialist personification of all that is wrong with quota-hiring, Powell, was/is almost single-handedly responsible for the failure of the Allied Forces to totally annihilate Soddom Hussein and his loathesome and fearsome, mass-murdering gangster régime at the conclusion of the Gulf "war."

Right in character, Powell's first reaction to Tuesday's atrocities was to say, soto voice, that we "must bring the perpetrators to 'justice.'"

[The "perpetrators" Mr Powell, are all dead by ther own hand]

We must answer this barbaric act of war with a retaliation so ferocious and so complete that there remains no remnants of this Evil -- Sodom Hussein included -- upon God's Green Earth!

Now are you missing anything?

Nice try, but try that on some other forum. You might be able to fool them, or at least you can have a lot more fun pretending.

Yes, you did. The Iraqi regime is based in the Arab Baath Socialist Party which is secularist and opposed to the Islamic fundamentalism. That is why Iraq was willing to fight US sponsored war against Iran.

You see, the situation in the Middle East is complex. Taleban movement was based on the groups supported by US against Soviet occupation forces in Afganistan. The most oppresive Islamic regime is in Saudi Arabia - the key ally of United States which guarantees the American control over the free flow of oil. At present the main enemies of Taleban are Iran and Russia and they support the Northern Alliance in Afganistan. Taleban is supporting Chechen Islamic radical Wahabites who are by religion the brothers of Saudi rulers. Chechen war is encouraged also from the West by the same factions of Western establishment which support Islamic radicals in the Balkans.

So cool down and maybe play some chess to stimulate your brain.

Father and son Bush, are both aware of his failings in the Gulf war, thus Cheney and Rumsfeld will be making decisions with Bush.

I pray and trust so -- Please God?

But he must be gotten rid of. He is a mealy-mouthed blot upon the administration.

But the hardline Islamic Taliban remain unbowed, calling for Muslims to fight to the death against American aggression

I think we can accomodate these bleepholes.

Take the heads of these jihadists, and dump them by air over their respective populated areas, along with leaflets warning the populace to give up all the jihadists, or meet the same fate.

It's not just an option, it is probably a manditory requirement if Bush wishes to keep his job in 2004.

What is a requirement? Making sure only the truly bad guys perish? You can't be serious.
