To make a desert still: Dig a 2' to 3' concave hole. Look around for a tin/aluminium can for the collection of H2O. Don't worry, you'll find one. Hack up any vegetation you can find (Prickly pear is very moist) and sprinkle on the slopes down to your can. Spread your poncho/plastic sheet over the hole - place a rock in the middle to direct H2O into your can. Seal the edges up top with sand/rocks - best in open sun. Each still will get you a pint of H2O minimum per day if maintained.
Any survival kit should include a 4'x 4' sheet of visqueen (plastic) - roll it up and stuff it into a good collection can - light but indispensable! This help? ;-)

Exactly. My 72 hour kit is up-to-date, I rotate through everything at General Conference in Oct. My food storage is getting there, I got a new job and moved a couple of years ago and elected to not move the food storage with me. It does take a long time to get back to where I was, but I'm getting there. After watching the aftermath of Katrina, I threw a couple more books and a needlework kit into the 72 hour kit. I HATE to be bored. LOL.
Exactly. And don't open the freezer door more than necessary. Frozen foods can stay frozen for up to 3 days. Invite the neighbors over and have a feast so it doesn't go to waste. :)

The bleach is important. Pure, plain water has a tendency to go bad somehow. A drop of bleach cures the disease in most cases.
Amen. I have many items needed for a 72 hour, but need to pack it. Its really scary to think about, but considering what we saw on the tv, its criminal not to do it. you never ever know.
We were talking today at church about Katrina. And we all said what a difference it would have made if everyone had their 72 hour kits in order. They could have made it through until the feds arrived.
I was just wondering how many hot water heaters in NO had untapped sources of fresh water, especially in those apartment buildings.
Surely the water heaters were not all in the basements.

Not if stored properly. If you can the items properly, or seal them in 5-gallon plastic buckets, nothing can get in and it lasts a long time.

I'd store whatever wouldn't go to waste, like canned goods. It's remarkable what you can get in tins these days. I've also sealed flour in #16 cans, as well as pasta, and dehydrated potatoes.
Honey prices are up because their is a fungus that is killing honey bees like crazy.
