I haven't posted here in quite a while; though I have been checking in frequently. I know this is a vanity post, but I just can't seem to get to sleep tonight. Any one else having trouble sleeping??
I don't know about you, But I want to hear a Churchill-type speech from President Bush; relating to the monumental events of the last 48 hrs and also reminding us of who we are as a people. His speeches so far have been good, but too short. I know he can do it, and it's been so long (8yrs) since we have heard a "proud to be an American speech" We need it. That said; Here is my take on the last 2 days:
I can't beleive what has happened. It is all so surreal (not to mention horrible, awful, and sickening.)
As much as I have been horrified by the events of Tuesday 9/11, I have to say much of my faith in the American people has been restored
I remember going to Church this past Sunday and wondering ,during a quiet moment of Prayer, if we as a people were a lost cause to our Lord. (I have these thoughts from time to time. Particularly when we have been faced with some moral dilema and we have a: "It's his or her personal life, it doesn't matter", moment and the whole country gives a fat lazy yawn and does nothing.)
But Tuesday, I saw America at her very best, in the midst of the very worst. Images of the brave fire fighters and police running back in to try to help people with no thought for their own personal safety, the rescue workers going day and night to the point of exhaustion trying to dig people out. The huge numbers of people linning up to give blood.( Even here in LA, people are donating blood in such large numbers that the red cross hotline (linked to one of our classic rock stations) had to stop taking appointments.) The construction people unveiling the giant flag over the damaged Pentagon. Story after story of the kindness of New Yorkers (who aren't usually known for kind acts) And the most haunting accounts of those on the hijacked planes calling loved ones to say goodbye. And the incredibly brave attempts of those who tried to stop the terrorists in the face of certain death.
I try to imagine the 3 on the flight that crashed in Pittsburgh and their words "we will probally die, We are going to stop this." and also the flight attendents whose throats were slashed while fighting the terrorists to keep them out of the cockpit of one of the planes. They were both women. It restores my faith in my own gender. The younger generation (the ones we thought didn't care about anything)is eager to enlist. I'm sure there will be thousands more stories like these in the weeks and months to come And for some reason, I keep thinking of the words from President Bush's inaugural speech: Do you not think that an Angel rides in the whirlwind?
Let me just say in response to your writing - this is the challenge of our generation. Our folks had WWII, Korea, and the depression - and they came through it all in strength and heroism. We shall see if this pampered generation has that same true grit.
Much better that our enemies never see it coming.
Sorry it takes me so long to respond, I am the worlds worst and slowest typist. A gold fish could type faster than I can.
But the Congress...that's another story. If I hear one more supercillious politician spout off about how we must all forget our differences and come together under a bipartisan banner, I'll puke (figuratively) down his (her) throat.
America has come together and is ready for action now, not after more, pointless and endless political posturing. I don't think many in Congress are reading their constituency with adequate accuracy.
My advice to Congress: Declare war and shut up.
bump.
My phone rang at 8 a.m. with a friend concerned about me and then again at 8:15 with another friend. I finally fell back asleep around 11 only to be awoken again at 12 by my Dad.
The Mayor has closed Manhattan below 14th Street so I have not been able to go back to work. I never thought I'd be so anxious to go to work in my life! I want touch base with my co-workers, one of whose sons is a New York City firefighter who is now at the WTC (he was not among the first wave of firefighters but was called in that afternoon). I have wanted to call her, as I did the first day, but am afraid that she would want to keep her phone line free for her son to call.
I have one friend who is an ex-freeper who has become affiliated with the Lew Rockwell/Justin Raimondo crowd and believes the U.S. has brought this on itself because of its strong support for Israel. I never want to talk to her again in my life!!!!
So many of the posts here have been about "liberals who have come around." Anyone else experience paleo-con friends they no longer want to be friends with?
