ABC's Ted Koppel "stunned" by Cohen's mention of "nuclear" as possible response to WTC attack
ABC News ^ | 9/12/01 | ABC Live Coverage

Posted on 09/12/2001 6:15:00 AM PDT by ppaul

About 5:50 am Pacific, ABC's Ted Koppel was being interviewed. He was in London. It was mentioned that before Koppel became famous for Nightline, he served as a correspondent covering the U.S. State Department. Koppel said he had been watching the ABC coverage this morning for a "couple of hours" and that he was "stunned" when he saw the interview early this morning of former Secretary of Defense, William Cohen, and Cohen mentioned the use of nuclear weapons among the list of possible responses to yesterday's terrorist attack. Koppel said it was the first time he ever recalls any high level person mentioning nuclear weapons as even a possibility.

"Use the strongest nukes we have on those evil scumbags.

Neutron bombs would be better. Then we can just go in and take over the oil fields.

NOT IF THEY'RE NOT HERE! NOT IF THEY'RE TURNED TO GLASS FIRST! Very true. Undeniable.

I suggest you sit by your television, awaiting the dropping of the nukes to scrub the Middle East clear of its Arab population.

Do not abandon your post. It may take hours. Or days. Or weeks. Or years. Don't give up hope. Only nukes will work.

Sorry to be a smart-ass, guys. You do make some good points especially about the ineffectiveness of past sanctions and strikes. But you just aren't going to get what you want. It just won't happen unless there is another attack and that attack uses NBC weapons. That's American military doctrine. Bush is orthodox in this regard by all indications. Not the cowboy you want to lead us today.

(After waiting a few weeks for all the bloating corpses to deflate and quit stinking.) A pragmatic man, concerned for our occupation forces. You did make me smile there.

If folks want to vent, let 'em vent.

You have sunk to a new low. Vent? Advocating killing millions of people all over the world before you even know who was responsible. is moronic. It makes you the same as the terrorists. Exactly the same. Someone attacked us, therefore before we even know who did it,, we advocate killing the first people who come to mind. Don't punish the guilty, just kill everyone in every country you suspect.

You really have hit bottom, or Maybe not, anyone who could advocate that kind of thing is capable of even lower thinking.

You and all who advocted that deserve to be condensended to.

One idea: dust off the old 'demonstration' idea rejected by Truman and drop a nuke outside of Kabul, say at 3AM.

Then tell the Talibastards we would like bin Laden and all of his friends delivered in chains to the Pak border for surrender to US forces ... or else.

Tell them we're not in a hurry. They could take 24 hours if needed.

Your smug moral superiority is grating on me. "Killing millions" of these ragheads seems just about right to me,

The reason it grates on you is that everyone who doesn't advocate killing millions of "ragheads" (they arent people, just like jews weren't or black people) is morally superior to you and your ilk. You are an immoral person. Perhaps you are the sub-human.

BTW, genius, who did this? You have a crystal ball?

We as a nation have used the bomb before. It got the message across to Japan.

Who would you use it on? Are you one of those on here who advocate killing all the people in the middle east?

One idea: dust off the old 'demonstration' idea rejected by Truman and drop a nuke outside of Kabul, say at 3AM. You would likely blind thousands with such a demonstration if it were close enough to Kabul to be terrifying. Even at 3AM. Not quite as harmless a demonstration as you might think initially. Then there's the fallout in the immediate area. And what about fallout if the wind blows it toward our allies in the region? Over the decades, it's become pretty clear that nothing about the use of nukes is simple or straightforward. Like Daedelus, don't carelessly fly too close to the fire of the sun. Nukes are for Doomsday, not mere tragedy. Not even for huge tragedies.

How many of you folks actually think it's a good idea to drop nukes on the borders of the old Soviet Union? I inow it makes me a freak but I tend to believe that there are enduring geopolitical realities you have to face. These are what Bush and Cheney are discussing today.

Hey, Tom. You could teach at any great liberal university. Courses like "P*ssy 101:How To Be A Pantywaste". (And you're an elitist; mobile homes indeed).

I could sure teach you something if you have the intellect to learn. If you think I'm a pantywaist (?) because I insist on knowing who the enemy is before killing a few million others then you are the weakest link.

I see. Thank you for the wisdom. All successful power is based upon fear. Gee, and to think I actually believed the Constitution and Christianity derived their significance from something other than fear. Foolish me, I somehow believed love might have some significance over fear.

Had we begun with a fear of God, I might be more agreeable at heart.

You evoke a mental picture: A middle-aged assistant professor of English or Philosophy in some second-rate college, with a ponytail, a scraggly little testosterone-impaired beard, and a tweed jacket worn over a black pullover turtleneck. Kind of a faggoty-looking creep, but VERY popular with the dumber coeds. (You have them convinced that a normal penis is 3 inches long and 1/2 inch wide). By the way, you have appropriated the name of a great American as your screen name. At least I EARNED mine.

Might I suggest a simpler task than evoking nuclear war?

Since Hillary Clinton wanted to create a Palestinian State and hugged Arafat's wife so closely, perhaps it would be easier to remove those who harbor terrorists from US public office by Constitutional methods before we so quickly obliterate portions of the world by WMD. Just an idea.

What I advocate is an eye for an eye, tooth for tooth.

The life of one terrorist, is not worth the lives that we lost in that bombing. It's not even remotely equal. Especially when it's war they want with us. Do I believe we should annihilate people with nuclear weapons, Yes I do. To save our troops the suffering that it will take to get retribution from the terrorist nations, and those who harbor them.

The ideology of turning the other cheek is sometimes okay, like if you're in a playground scuffle. When someone kills thousands of your citizens, do you turn the other cheek? No, you do not. By doing so, you entice others to do the same. What will it take for you, and the people like you to get the idea that they are an unreasonable people? These terrorists are single minded. They have not one shred of humanity, as they are fighting what they believe to be a holy war.

The people who are so afraid to offend the other nations, and the people who are so afraid offending people of that persuasion, should be held in contempt. This is our country, this our people we're talking about here. If you think for one minute that killing one person is going to stop terrorism, and the crap that's happened, you are wrong. For every terrorist like Osama Bin Laden, there are 100 more behind him waiting to die for the cause.

You are naieve to think that at this point, we can just all get along, or that we need to have compassion for these people. Last night I got to listen to my neighbors rejoice and celebrate something, who are also of the Middle Eastern Persuasion. Now, I want you to think about how that might feel. I want you to have a very clear understanding of what a lot of us out here are feeling. It's not vengeance we want, it's not indiscriminant extermination we want. We want the people who did it, the people who fed them, clothed them, and nurtured them. We want the people who had the money, and who helped them perpetrate this act of war against our country. If it means we have to destroy a nation to get to these people, so be it. Guilt by association, is still guilt.

Don't ever think that for one minute that you as a person are superior, or the majority. You are not. Thomas Jefferson when he was alive was ready to decimate the British with all means necessary, especially after the Boston Massacre. That was nothing compared to this. I think once you get that through your polyannic head, you'll understand what it means to be an American.

"Neutron bombs! Leave the buildings, they may be of some value."

When they cool down we can use them as outhouses, or better yet, free housing for liberal demoncraps.

You sound just like the nay sayers when Bush #1 went into Kuwait.

Its not necessary to hunt down every rifle in every cave! The few modern centers they operate from are do able targets as is control of the roadways, water and food supplies. If they have a hard life now, it could be made much harder.

The Russians didn't succeed because they didn't follow the tactics of the Nazis and the Japanese in controlling accupied teritory.
