Angry Putin Calls for World Response to Terror

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin told President Bush he was deeply shocked over ``barbarous terrorist acts'' in the United States on Tuesday and called for coordinated international action against terrorism.

Planes crashed into the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon outside Washington in what Bush called an apparent terrorist attack.

In a telegram that began ``Dear George,'' Putin said ''barbarous terrorist acts aimed against wholly innocent people cause us anger and indignation.''

``I ask you to pass on our deepest sympathies to the relatives of the victims of this tragedy, and the entire suffering American people. We understand their sorrow and pain as Russia has also suffered from terrorism,'' he wrote.

``There is no doubt that such an inhuman act must not go unpunished. The entire international community should unite in the struggle against terrorism,'' he wrote in the text, issued in Russian by the Kremlin.

Putin knows that Russia could be next. They and Afghanistan are not exactly bosom buddies.

Yeah. So its time that the U.S. join Russia in supporting Russia's war against the Jihad in Chechnya. And then Russia and the U.S. can cooperate in dismantling the Taliban in Afghanistan and maybe they might find Bin Laden hidden under a rock somewhere.

We have got to pull Putin away from China. We should be Russia natural ally. Allowing them to chum up with China is dangerous. Putin is probably a good guy to deal with. Whe should persue it. Alliances between them and us would be very helpful. We could get their help in going after Afganistan for instance. I think that's where we're going to wind up.

Please overlook our use of nuclear weapons in Afghanistan in retribution for this attack. I'm sure the citizens of Russia wouldn't mind a little pay-back against Afghanistan.

Don't. But I reason that Putin would have sympathy for the U.S. in this, as both he and his predecessors had to deal with terrorism in response to attacks on places like Chechnya.

Let's not come down with Uncle Joe Stalin syndrome though. I admit I appreciate the gesture. But for him, anti-fundamentalist military actions are also the basis for an alliance with Red China...

And let us not forget it was the Russians and Chinese who have historically spoken up for the poor little Palestinians every time a bunch of Israeli school girls was turned into mush by a nailbomb while waiting for the bus to take them to synagogue.

For now, though as I said I appreciate his statements, I remain extremely suspicious of Putin.

Don't be. I think he is an intelligent man who is determined to support his nation to the best of his ability. Sometimes that means that he will not act in U.S. interests, but that is understandable.

He is at least a thousand times better than Yetslin, and probably a bit less dangerous than Lebed. All in all, his autocratic style, discipline and quiet but forceful personality, are probably just what Russia needs right now.

And, if he is willing to back up his kind words with Russian arms, we should be willing to accept his help.

Putin, being former KGB, no doubt has had some prior run-ins with the Afghani terrorists of one kind or another. There will be no love lost there. This leader is a keeper!
