Here's My Poem, "The Day of Terror":

The Day of Terror

Oh my Country,
My Country
Now you are stricken
At morning light,
By mayhem most foul!

Behold the terror that grips the skies
As the smoke billows across the land
Behold the petty vengeance of America’s enemies
As hundreds and thousands panic
As fear takes hold
And rules the airwaves

As you listen to the radio,
Wonder about your loved ones,
And whether you shall see them again
Wonder whether this is the end or
Just the beginning
And know, things will never be the same again

Howl for justice,
For retribution against those
Who have wrought havoc upon our nation
And deal with the uncertainty of not knowing
Who the culprit is

Try to go about your day
Try to hold back the tears
And the anger
To write your papers
And attend your classes

See your brother
So long alien from his father,
Call and talk with him for the first time in ages
See churches fill and people pray
Like they never have before
Pray for peace
For an end to the confusion
-Adam Graham

My husband is an administrator at a small state college. He said the kids gathered in the food court outside his office were glad classes were cancelled. That was it. Woo hoo, classes are cancelled. I'm glad that wasn't the reaction on Dec. 7, 1941.

When I mentioned to a friend that we ought to bomb the hell out of Afganistan and any other country harboring terrorists, she said, but there are innocent people there. I responded--what do you consider all those people who died today in the WTC, the pentagon and on those airplanes??? Perhaps 10,000 innocents--or do our innocents not count?

Here at Macalester College in St. Paul, afternoon classes were cancelled. Everyone's pretty shook up; TVs were put up in our campus center, people were calling NY, and we had a prayer service this afternoon. I'm supposed to go tutor physics in 8 minutes, but I'm going to stay right here and watch the President. Finally, I bet I'm not the only one having trouble concentrating on my homework.

At LeTourneau University in Longview, TX, classes were not canceled, but they were certainly unproductive.
Most of us have spent the day alternating between praying for the victims, the nation, the nation's leaders, and everyone directly involved, and watching the news.
There is a calm, but sad, even angry, aura throughout the student body and administration.

This is the editorial reply to today's horrific events from THE STATE NEWS- Michigan State's student newspaper:

SN EDITORIAL BOARD: Terrorist actions despicable; America must unite behind president

Terrorism struck our nation Tuesday in a way the Cold War never had. Four hijacked planes turned into weapons more fierce than the surprise bombing of Pearl Harbor.

The skyline of the United States will forever be different - the World Trade Center’s twin towers gone. A portion of the Pentagon is wiped away.

“Freedom itself was attacked this morning by a faceless coward, and I assure you freedom will be defended,” President Bush said, a somber look on his face and a serious tone in his voice. “Make no mistake. The United States will hunt down and punish those responsible for these cowardly actions.”

We echo our president’s vigilance and stand behind his response to this attack on U.S. soil.

He has vowed these cowards will be held accountable for the hundreds of lives lost in four airliners - and for the thousands who died in New York and our nation’s capital.

But until that day comes, we choose not to hate the world, or be afraid to live our lives and love our loves.

that's a great poem. but it sounds like you're in the wrong business after hearing peter jennings today.

i heard that one loud mouth student (elsewhere) who was cheering the act was beaten to a pulp by fellow students. now that's some 'howling' i'd like to see.

Here at UB, things have ground to a halt, but we're pitching in together. Cell phones have been lent to students from the City to call to check on their loved ones. We tried to get a group of EMT's together to try to go to NY, but that fell apart since we couldnt get authorization to go in time to do much of anything (its a 6-hour drive).

We're pulling together, and becoming patriotic. God bless Amercia, land that I love.

Hey, I had a professor who whined that the Palestinian terrorists were being "exterminated," you should have heard the emotion in his voice. And he was referring VERY specifically to just those people targeted by Israel.

He also didn't like the term "Jihad vs. McWorld" (Huntington's thesis that Muslims are the next major enemy of the civilized world), because the term "Jihad" had religious significance to Muslims.

We have just experienced the first major strike in the Jihad against America, anyone who doubts the extremist Muslims' intent is a fool. Anyone who doubts that most Muslims (not necessarily in America, but around the world) are extremists is a liar. Anyone who doesn't want to believe extremist Islam is one of the greatest threats to the security of the free world because they don't want to be considered "racist" is a coward.

We didn't cancel classes at Wisconsin, and they're not cancelled tomorrow. It's up to the professors to do it if they want to. I think it's a smart move, and a smart way to do it. Let's show the world that Americans have the power to continue on with their lives despite the terrible loss. We'll make it. And we can't run scared.

Your poem was moving... here at my school, everyone's in shock. We had a candlelight vigil for an hour this evening, praying for the victims, their familes, and our leaders. There are a few too many paranoid peace-seekers, but many of us are behind Bush, including many of the liberals.

I shall be spending tomorrow searching for a flag for my door...

Classes were not cancelled at Ithaca College, since we thought it might be helpful to give students a place to gather together for mutual support. We put up TVs in the Campus Center and provided counseling from Counseling Center staff and chaplains. We made telephones available with long distance service for students to make calls. Tonight we held a candlelight vigil with lots of prayer and song, including the 23rd Psalm. At the end there was a spontaneous singing of the Star Spangled Banner.

Northern Colorado. My professor's faculty recital, always a big event, was postponed. I must say I was surprised. I guess some of the sheep are aware something happened...

At our college in Buffalo, NY, classes were cancelled in the afternoon. I was there when the announcement was made and there were people gathered around the TV watching silently and in shock at what was happening. I ran into some of my students and we hugged and commiserated. A Sudanese student was anxious to speak and he told us about Bin Laden's presence in Sudan. He has seen first hand what Islamic fanatism can do; after all two million of his countrymen have been killed in the Civil War there. A student from West Africa had also suffered from Islamic fanatics and was very emotional to say the least. Two students from Bosnia (Serbs) observed gravely that their country has suffered under Muslim insurgents but did not go into Clintoon's horrible mistakes in that region. Several American students were crying and everyone looked just plain shocked. I did not see any of the Yemeni Muslim students anywhere.
