All calm. Gas prices "normal" (as normal as they can be). Gassed up a bit ago, no long lines. People very quiet. Stopped at the ATM machine to get some emergency cash. First attempt failed w/ no explanation. Went inside and tellers appeared shaken & were bustling about. People were waiting by the safe deposit box desk. Second attempt at ATM withdrawal went OK.

Houston--schools and universities closed, Enron Tower evaculated, my husband's building evacuated, etc.

Wondering about the port and oil refineries on the east side of the city. After hitting "trade" and "military", seems like "energy" would be the next target.

Lawton/Ft. Sill, OK: Rumors of $4-$5 gal/gas in Oklahoma City triggered gas lines all over SW Oklahoma. My wife was with her best friend when she paid $2.19 a gallon at a small Total near Cameron University because they claimed they were almost out of gas. I drove by it and they were in the act of taking their prices down while I heard Gov. Keating asking anyone who witnesses gouging to report it to the OK Trade Commision.

FREEPers, there are still those who are willing to take advantage of the consumer even in our moments of anguish. Get the name, address, take a picture if you can, and report these @$$wipes to your BBB or other consumer agency. Then don't do them the honor of your business in the future. Tell your friends and aqcuaintances.

One Green Bay station was reporting long lines at gas stations (channel 2 or 5, can't remember which).

I gassed up on my way home, but I was on E anyway. Price was $1.69 a gallon for regular, $1.89 for premium, same as yesterday.

Well, for what it's worth, over here in Fairmont WV, I saw no evidence of any reaction to the events, other than people saying they had been watching TV or listening to the radio to keep up. All businesses I know of were open, all public schools open, the college my wife teaches at still open, got gas an hour ago at regular price, and nothing that would indicate anythign was amiss elsewhere. I guess it makes a difference that there are no military bases in WV. Tv did indicate the the FBI fingerprint center down the road was also going to stay open with no change in schedule.

Also I called up the local Red Cross office downtown and volunteered to come in and give blood plus bring in some other people, but the lady who answered the phone said they didn't need any, but they'd put a notice in the newspaper if they did. (I am O-negative so thought it would be helpful).

Johnstown, Pennsylvania: Approximately 25 miles north of Somerset.

Temporarily domiciled in Sleep Inn on Route 219 South. Exit off Route 56 East to Airport shut off by State Police. Two aircraft seen after 4:00 PM: One civilian helicopter and an airliner that looked like a United flight. It was seen moving North, parallel to Route 219, headed for the airport. It dumped fuel as it flew low in the direction of the local airport.

Banks closed, ending our audit for today. Pittsburgh was a complete mess as people were sent home at about the same time. Schools closed. Most stores, except Walmart and Kmart closed. The local Hoss' Restaurant locked its doors after we got in for a last minute lunch. Little street traffic. Very quiet. People milled around the downtown Johnstown streets looking shell shocked when I arrived this morning.

Milwaukee, WI

Federal courthouse evacuated early

Federal employees sent home

Airport closed, vehicles barred from airport roads.

Public schools stay open- parents allowed to pick up children anytime.

Cops on high alert.

Many churches holding special services.

Colleges closed early

After-school activities cancelled.

Most evening meetings cancelled

People talking about it everywhere- some angry, some scared, some saying the "chickens have come home to roost" for the US, most in disbelief that this could happen here.

KMBZ radio in Kansas City, Missouri, is reporting $5 a gallon for gas... MO atty gen Jay Nixon says that the prices up to $5 a gallon in KC are the result of opportunistic gouging and are illegal and that he will prosecute...

Rumors of $5.00 per gallon in Detroit...

Gas lines formed all afternoon throughout Tulsa, blocking major streets and intersections. Tulsa County Sheriff had to ask for calm...

Here is an update from Kansas City.

All this is from Drudge plus I live near KC and just saw on the local news some stations charging 4.99 a gal.

I'm so mad at my wife. Called her at home from work at about 11 and asked her to fill up the 6 five gallon gas cans we have because I read on FreeRepublic that gas prices were jumping. Called her again an hour later, she still hadn't done it. Called her again an hour later, still no, but said she was going.

Got home and on the way home every gas station I passed had huge lines and prices were up at least 50 cents from when I left for work. I was smug knowing that I had at least 30 gallons of cheap gas. AAAAAARRGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH....she got to the gas station (no lines) but she didn't fill them up because she said the gas was too expensive!!!!!AAAAAAARGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHFFFFFF....it's rumored to be three bucks a gallon in Lansing Michigan. I live out in the country, the closest gas station is sold out.

Lord help me get over this anger....

I worked in the Wall Street area and remember when they started building the World Trade Center twin buildings. Today I watched them collapse on TV. Buildings can be rebuilt, but the people - God, the innocent souls, the firemen and policemen.

Northern Illinois University campus, DeKalb, Ill.: On my way to my first class, I overheard someone say, "have you heard the news?" The answer was, "Yeah, I saw it on TV this morning." I walked past before I could hear the rest of it, but I could already tell it wasn't something good. In class, everyone was talking about it. I heard that one tower of the WTC had fallen(I think both had by that time, but we didn't know it) and that the Pentagon had been hit. Afterwards I walked back to my dorm, and everyone on the way was talking about it. Everyone you met asked if you'd heard the news. A lot of us gathered in someone's room and watched the news. One of the people who live on my floor had seen a girl crying near the Student Center. Her father was on one of the planes. Later I ate lunch(there were much fewer people than usual), and they had a TV set up by the tables, tuned to CNN. I had a meeting with the coach of the I.E. team, and she was very shaken. The meeting was very short, and she said at the end she was going to go pray and then go home. In my other class today, people again talked about it before class. The teacher came in and said something like the obvious question was would we have class today, and that we would if there were enough people, and it appears that there are, and if you can focus on the subject. We then went into English population patterns during the time America was settled, and then into American population patterns at the same time. It looks like all the colleges in Chicago have closed, but we haven't, being away from the city by a good distance, but the attacks are clearly the main topic of conversation. The obvious comparison to Pearl Harbor's been made several times, and every time it's answered that this is worse, which it is. I'd say the Civil War as a whole was much worse, but this is the worst single day in American history. Everyone's a lot quieter than normal, and a girl on a computer near mine looks like she's about to cry.

Dallas/Fort Worth Texas

Dallas (AP) -- Dallas' World Trade Center has been evacuated. A spokeswoman said the office building on Interstate 35E, about a mile north of downtown Dallas, was evacuated about 10 o'clock this morning. She said the evacuation was purely precautionary, and that no threat had been received.

The federal buildings in downtown Dallas and Fort Worth have also been evacuated, as has Dallas' World Trade Center. The evacuations were said to be precautionary and not in response to any threat. The Naval Joint Reserve Base in Fort Worth also has been locked down.

Mayor Ron Kirk was among the hundreds filling out forms and waiting for a technician to draw blood. "When you've had a horrific tragedy, especially like today's, I think people want to do something," he said. "I think people know intuitively that they need to do this."

DALLAS - Many places of worship around North Texas made special provisions to keep their doors open for prayers throughout the day. In downtown Dallas, some employees went to Thanksgiving Square to reflect. Grace Temple Baptist Church held a special service at the request of upset congregation members. The Catholic Diocese of Dallas offered a special mass at the downtown cathedral. While there were many services Tuesday, many more were scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday night.
