CARRIERS WILL HELP WITH DISASTOR AND MAYBE AERIAL PATROLS WHILE MARINES MAY BE ON STAND-BY NEAR WASHINGTON ON AMPHIBIUOS SHIPS!!! The NY mayor was asked about this. He said the ships are coming to NYC to "reassure" the people, and to show that the government is doing everything possible to respond to the disaster.
This was an interesting new conference(!).
One of the first questions was from a woman reporter who said something like, Reports are that eight planes were hijacked this morning. Four are accounted for. Do you believe the other four will be striking additional targets?
The mayor didn't deny the question (!) he just said he had no information about that.
If there ARE four more hijacked planes in the air, isn't it pointless now? If the AF downed that plane bound for Camp David, isn't it clear to the terrorists that these planes couldn't hit another target? And if they were hijacked around 8am EST, wouldn't they be running out of fuel by now? Mark W.

Those carriers are equipped with pretty big hospital facilities and experienced trauma/triage personnel. The medical facilities are miniscule as compared to the hospitals in NY and NJ. (Victims are being ferried over here to NJ to the Atlantic Highlands.
Point.....That's not why they're being sent.

Wrong place to send them. They need to be deployed wherever we might need to strike (ie Afganistan)
Why do you think they are being sent there?

I agree - NYC hospitals are huge and they are also sending people to Westchester County Medical Center Trauma Center. But they have military planes flying overhead I just heard one go by - so I believe they think that maybe something else may come over by water.

I know that they may not add much in the way of material aid, but I have to think that if I were in NY right now I would be very happy to see them there.

Do not forget that every carrier battle group has Aegis capabilities. Besides using the carriers as a staging area to coordinate relief, the aegis systems can singlehandedly be used to drop anything suspicious from the overhead airspace.

Pretty sophisticated radar, communications, and anti air capability is available on several types of naval vessel.
Makes sense to add those assets where possible when the only attack we've seen to date was aerial.
I only hope that FEMA and such are also considering other means of attack/defense.

Concur. Although they could do this equally well, further out to sea, the nation needs to see the military as a presence in order that it becomes used to events about to happen.
