If all FReepers donate at least 10% of what they donated to FR or just a pint of blood, it will make a big difference for those injured in this tragedy.

We can and will do more, but this is a good first steep.

Just donated. All FReepers do the same.

I suggest everyone call their local hospital and Red Cross center and find out if a local blood drive has been organized. I just called mine and they hadn't done anything yet. They are now checking on doing that. I said we shouldn't wait until blood is being called for and needed. We should organize to get it now so that it is available when calls come to them for it. We need to get them thinking ahead. There will be many people in NY and maybe DC needing blood. Let's make sure it's there for them and they don't have to wait for it.

Thank you for posting this thread. We should all take you suggestions very seriously and act on them immediately.

do you know if you have to have already donated blood before this? don't they have to screen your blood first?

Christine: I gave blood and they ask a series of questions. Now granted this was awhile back, but I'm sure that is what they are still doing. It wasn't painful and it didn't take too long.

I'm going to find out if they are setting up here in Austin for more sites.

God bless you Christine for helping others.

I called at 7.30a.m. Someone said they would get back to me. Nothing yet.

But I can and will make a cash donation.

The suburbs around NYC are running out of supplies to collect blood in. Red Cross shipping in materials for more collection tomorrow.

I just got back from giving blood here in Florida. Many people in line to give blood. I'm terrified of needles, but I didn't care today. All I had to think about was what the people in NYC, on the planes and in Washington were going through.

That completely took my mind off of it.

Christine: they will ask you questions, and will screen your blood before giving it to anyone. It only takes a few minutes.

God bless this country.

"do you know if you have to have already donated blood before this? don't they have to screen your blood first?"

Sorry, christine, I just found your post. No, you do not have to have been a donor previously. It is a very easy process, it doesn't take much time at all. They will ask you a few simple questions, then afterwards they will screen the blood before using it. We are all feeling so helpless today and aside from prayer this is the single most beneficial thing we can do. BTW, if you happen to know anyone who cannot donate blood or cannot get to a Blood Bank, they can help by making a donation to the Red Cross. The scope of this disaster will no doubt strain their resources.

Thanks for the ping, steve. I'll see what I can do, considering I don't have any credit cards.

What a miserable day. The only think keeping me from falling apart competely is the fact that I don't want to give the terrorists the benefit of what they wanted, to inflict terror and suffering within the American populace. I refuse to cave in to their terror.

Dear God, please comfort those innocent souls that have been sent to You today.

Just got back from donating. The red cross had previously planned a blood drive at the local mall. It was overrun with people. They were lined up out into the mall.

Before going, I sent a site-wide email at work encouraging everyone there to donate. Many people indicated that they would. If possible, do this at your work as well. Most likely it will save someones life.

God bless you for both giving blood and urging everyone else to do so as well.

I'm currently taking antibiotics to kick an ear infection, so I can't give blood (I got a sturn warning at a Christmas blood drive when I tried to give blood with just a minor sore throat.)

But I can (and have) help get the word out early to donate blood.
