This Band Of Brothers Premiers Tonight...Will It Tell The Truth?
My own & HBO | 9-10-01 | timydnuc

Posted on 09/09/2001 5:56:55 PM PDT by timydnuc

Tonight they will premire a progam that my father lived and fought through. I heard the stories, I knew the man. I wonder if they will give him the respect that he, and his buddies, so richly deserve. I doubt it, but I'll reserve judgemant until I see the presentation.

My father was one of those 101st Airborne landed behind the lines on D-day. He was one of those glorious troops that survived the whole war. He won 1 Purple Heart, and a Silver Star, with a cluster during that war. I was 101st Airborne in the Nam.

The show is about to come on...I need to go! What do you think?

Probably get a truer version if the they shot the Brotherhood of War, or Team Yankee or the Ten thousand.

On Labor Day Brit Hume did an interview with Stephen Ambrose and Ambrose said he could not only know what was going to happen in each episode, but could predict what the actual dialogue was. He was impressed by how true to his book it was. He said Tom Hanks made sure of that. We don't get HBO--so let us know what you think.

In all honesty, I do not understand how a guy like Tom Hanks reconciles his near worship of the Greatest Generation with his support of the likes of a clinton. Only in Hollywood - where reality doesn't have to matter, I guess.

Dorothy Rabinowitz(sp) wrote a glowing critique of the series in the Wall Street Journal last Friday. I have utmost faith in Dorothy's analysis.

The first thing I noticed was that they did not have airborne training haircuts. Their hair is much too long to be realistic for any military training. Anyone else notice this or anything else?

We are all multi-dimensional, I understand how you feel, I've got friends how are good people but they think willard was a great president, of course they'd say the samething about me and Reagan.
I've seen Hanks any number of times on the tube he APPEARS to be a regular guy, of course he could be acting.

I respect your fathers awards but he did not win them. He was in a war not a contest. I am confident he more than earned them but he for sure did not win them

I'm with you. I find Ambrose most objectionable, however. So, I hope those watching enjoy it, but I won't be one of them.

I checked out some photos of the 506th Airborne when it was at Tocca. Of the photos showing troops without their hats, none of them had the 'high & tight' crew cuts that are current with airborne troops today. They didn't have long or even longish hair but it looks like a regular civilian cut of the era and what I wore during most of my military career, i.e. not a G.I. type crew cut.

On the Leno Show Hanks was talking about American Soldiers fighting in Belgium in 1942. These must have been really tough guys and very lonely.

Hanks may not know or care as much as he states.

After Spilberg declared war on American boys by cuting his ties with the Boy Scouts, I will never watch any Spilberg movie made after 2000.

It is strange that he would understand and respect the sacrifices of our military and still want to shake Clinton's hand.

The hair just looked much too long on some of the actors...I know that they are shaved today, but even then, I am sure that the guys in training had to have hair short enough to not have to worry about combing. It just did not seem realistic to me.

Check your history - the only U.S. troops fighting in Belgium in 1942 were over it in USAAF aircraft. We didn't get to Belgium on land until 1944.

Reports I've seen on the mini-series are that it is quite accurate, and Ambrose and crew were heavily involved. It looks really promising, hope my friend comes through with the tape. I'm sure I'll get the DVD's when they come out.
