More than four months after Chandra Levy vanished, frustrated investigators have interviewed hundreds of people who worked with, exercised with or lived near the missing intern, gone back to talk to about two dozen people and retraced their steps in the probe

That could have been just a nervous reaction. On the other hand ....
To give you another idea of the ineptitude of the D.C. police.... there are still 6 residents of Chandra's apartment building that the police haven't interviewed yet. The police think they are on summer vacation. I see.... These folks have been out of town from May 10th, when the police entered the apartment finally, to a week after labor day? Whatever.
The police were asked on May 6th to enter the apartment, they agreed, but kept putting it off. Every single day the Levy parents asked, even after Condit called himself on the 7th, to cover his butt, the police still wouldn't go in. May 9th, Aunt Linda talks to the police, tells them Chandra called with the "big news" statement on the 29th, and she detailed explicitly, the affair with Condit. The police still didn't enter that day.
The police finally entered on May 10th. The Levy's called them, and the police just told them "She wasn't there". They have to wait until the 11th, til the police tell them that not only was she not there, but her bags are half packed, her computer, cell phone, wallet, ID, credit cards are still in the apartment.
Think of that if you were a parent. You have no idea up til the 10th, if your daughter is dead in her apartment. You learn on the 10th, she isn't there. You freak that she may have had something happen en route to California. You find out the next day on Saturday the 11th that all her stuff is still there.
You are Dr. Levy madly trying to get some other Doctors to cover your shifts, take your case load, and you fly out to D.C. on Wed the 15th. The police finally interview Condit, knowing all the details of the affair, but they don't press him on it. The next day, the parents walk into the police station, interview again, hold a press conference, and meet with Senators Feinstein and Boxer. Condit avoids the parents like the plague. That same day, Joleen Mckay walks into the field office of the FBI in San Francisco, details her affair with Condit, the no ID rule that just that week Aunt Linda told them about, then Condit dissapears from work on the hill the next day. Still, the police do nothing.
This has been the most pathetic excuse of an investigation that I have seen in my life.
The FBI and D.C. Police knew by May 16th that Gary Condit slept around, asked women to go on dates with him without ID, Chandra was sleeping with him, and she vanished without ID, and they did nothing.
Earth to law enforcement: That's why there are grand juries...
Is there an emoticon to express one tearing out one's hair??
Read the full article. It's bizarre in a way. The police used the grand jury to subpoena Condit's phone and credit card records already. Now, you have this info on one hand, then in the next breath, Chief Gainer said it's hard to call a grand jury into action without a body being found.
Let's review. They get a grand jury to act earlier on, but now they can't because there is no body. Ummm, I am not following this logic Chief Gainer.
Of course if I was being questioned about the disappearance of my girlfriend and I was INNOCENT, I would talk to the police as much as they wanted, I would submit to a lie detector and I would do anything to aid the investigation. Kind of makes you wonder, doesn't it?
Sure, you have the right to take the 5th amendment, and it can't be used against you in a court of law, but it can be used against you in a police investigation. If police are investigating a crime, they have a potential suspect, and the person takes the 5th, they zero in on that person to the exclusion of others.
This is what ticks me off about Abbe Lowell setting ground rules for the interviews. I would rather have seen Condit refuse to talk than to not be even asked pertinent questions.
The best world would have been Condit being asked the questions and either refusing to answer or lying. It's what has ticked me off about the media interviews with Condit and Dayton.
Larry King asked the watchbox question once of Dayton, but that was it. Let's see...Condit has been interviewed by ABC, Sacramento TV, People Mag, Newsweek, Vanity Fair, the Merced Paper, and Dayton by Larry King Live. Not one time was the erroneous timeline and Condit's whereabouts in detail on the first and 17th been asked in any of those interviews.
Larry King half assed tried with Dayton. Dayton says he was with Condit in the office all day. King left it at that, even though Condit originally said he was with Cheney til 3:30, at the doctor's for an hour, and with Rebecca Cooper for another hour. Now Dayton just states boldly, he and Condit were in the office all day, and no follow up questions? How about, who did you see, what calls did you make, who dropped in and saw Congressman Condit? That is a no-brainer follow up. But since Larry King has no brain, I guess it actually is a 1/10th brainer question in actuality.
