Top Five Technological Achievements by Canadians

By Michaela Pereira and Russ Pitts September 7, 2001

When you think of Canada, you probably think of Canadian bacon, hockey, and Mounties. But Canadians have made a fair share of technological advancements, some of which we take for granted in our everyday lives.

Here are the top five (plus one) technological advances by Canadians. The list will surprise you.

Honorable mention: Basketball by Dr. James Naismith

Bet you didn't know that Naismith was from Canada. Naismith was the athletic director at a private school in Massachusetts. He need a game for his boys to play indoors during the cold Massachusetts winters.

5.The telephone by Alexander Graham Bell

Bell was a well-known Canadian inventor. The Alexander Graham Bell Institute is located in Sydney, Nova Scotia.

4.Java by James Gosling

Gosling invented Java while he was at Sun Microsystems. We can't imagine our lives without all of the things it does, can we?

3.Panoramic camera by John Connon

Connon, of Elora, Ontario, invented the whole circle panoramic camera. It rotated 360 degrees in one exposure. Ironically, we were unable to find any pictures.

2.The Snowblower by Arthur Sicard

Canadians can't live without it. Sicard, from Quebec, invented the snowblower in 1925. His company still sells snowblowers today.

1.The retractable beer-carton handle by Steve Pasjac

Pasjac invented this handy device in 1957. There's not much information about Pasjac, but Canada and the world thank him.

OK, I'm going to unplug my keyboard after this one. The authors fail to mention that both Bell, and Naismith were both US Citizens at the time of their inventions. They also fail to mention another inventor Bombardier (sp?), the man who invented the snowmobile and his company is still in production today. They make Jet Skis and airplanes too.

Now can anybody think of any other can'tadian inventions?
I'm ducking for cover now!

How about the "bilingual nation?" This has done nothing but foster bitterness between French and English-speaking Canadians.

Debatable, he's certainly considered Canadian.

Now, Frederick Banting is without doubt a Canuck, and what did he discover?
