Washington -- Congressional leaders floated a proposal yesterday for millions of undocumented immigrants to earn by their actions the right to stay in the United States.

The idea of a "phased legalization" would allow the estimated 6 million to 8 million undocumented immigrants to qualify for legal residency by, for example, working at a steady job and paying taxes, taking English language classes and improving their education.

I assure you that George Bush will never get my vote again if this goes through

Think broader: are you going to vote for another Republicrat who's going to sell you out?

The act of illegal immigration alone should disqualify one from becoming a permanent resident. According to the current INS rules, a person who stayed in the US illegally for longer than 6 months is barred from re-entering for 10 (?) years.

Exactly! And this makes more sense than all that BS Bush and Fox are going on about. Illegal immigration should be strongly discouraged, not rewarded.

BUSH is "Amexica's" first Mexican Presidente.

What do I mean by this? In Mexico, there is no "rule of law" and never has been. The "law" in Mexico is just pretty prose, which is observed when it is useful to the political and power elites to stomp on peons, but is ignored when it is inconvenient to the power elites.

This is just Dubya extending this Mexican custom to "Amexica". The fact that ten million illegals are allowed to ignore the law makes no difference to them, because "the law", (that quaint concept), is inconvenient to Bush's major contributors in agriculture and unskilled labor industries.

The law is inconvenient? Ignore it....if it suits the power elite.

Welcome to the United States of AMEXICA....

Gracias a nuestra presidente, Jorge Bush.

Further: if you mix a glass of dirty water with clean, you just get a big glass of dirty water.

If you force a fever patient into bed with a healthy man, you just get two sick people.

Bringing Mexican disrespect for the law into "Amexica", with the blessings of our president and power elites, will only bring widespread disrespect for the rule of law to all Americans.

What American will for long hold sacred the rule of law when our president "blesses" ten million plus illegal Mexican criminals with the honor of citizenship?

Perhaps people want to come here because they like our laws?
Perhaps people want to leave their country because they don't like the lack of liberty, they admire us and want to become like us?
Perhaps they can't change their own home, so they vote with their feet and want to be a part of America? They want to be like Americans? They want to be Americans? They want their children to have a better life as Americans?
Mr. McGee, that was why a lot of Irish came here. Some are still coming, legally and illegally.
People do have goals, and do have the desire to learn, to work for those goals, to become a dream.

If they liked our laws, they'd be happy to follow them and only come here legally. If they are illegal workers, they are either taking money under the table and are also likely to not file an income tax return, or if they have presented fraudulent social security numbers, they committed a felony.

It should get you prison for felony fraud if you used false social security cards and birth certificates to obtain a job, also prison if you didn't report your income and pay an income tax. Americans are put in prison if they fail to pay their income taxes or commit fraud by using false documentation, illegals should be held to at least that same standard.

Whatever you do re your application for residency/citizenship, DON'T LET THEM KNOW YOU ARE ON THIS FORUM. Otherwise, you will be greeted, Elian style, in the middle of the night and whisked across the border (hopefully the Canadian one).

Then, we will get to see pictures of you happily being back in Canada.

Can you learn Spanish and then pretend you are completely illiterate in any language? You would probably have a good shot at getting status then.

Perhaps people want to come here because they like our laws?

And to prove it, they first break our laws? Why not stay in their homeland and work for the rule of law?

Sorry, I live in SoCal, and we are not being invaded, we are being TAKEN OVER. At any public park, you will hear ONLY Spanish, and see Mexican flags and decals on the cars. We are being INVADED by folks who do NOT love the USA, they only love the money to be made.

Travis, all the more reason to require they EARN citizenship. Sales taxes are taxes, and abidng by the laws of auto registration, legal licenses to drive, etc. is a way to bring them into being a part of the nation. I applaud measures short of amnesty ... amnesty is a slap in the face of those who've abided by the rules from the outset! We have enough 'special classes' of people who need do absolutely nothing for entitlements in this nation already. Enough!

At the time of his approach to Red China, Richard Nixon (a REPUBLICAN for those of you from Rio Linda) was approached by an internationalist businessman who was literally salivating over the prospect of access to the BILLIONS of potential Chinese slave laborers and “customers” (although this rocket scientist had apparently not yet concluded that the Chinese people would be hard pressed to buy his stuff without MONEY!!!!).

This businessman was concerned that Nixon had been SAYING that he was cooling to the idea of an opening to Red China to quell the uprising within the then very much more America-First rank and file Republican Party.

As reported years later, Nixon told the businessman
“DON’T LISTEN TO WHAT WE SAY: WATCH WHAT WE DO!”</FONT COLOR=RED>

It is my strong memory of THAT event which prompts me to post this graphic!

AS YOU READ THIS, IT APPEARS THAT BUSH, DASCHLE AND OTHERS ARE WELL DOWN THE ROAD TO USING THIS PAGE FROM THE NIXON PLAYBOOK!

Look, America – the IDEA not the PLACE – can only continue to exist if we heed the advice of the founding fathers (paraphrased here in the current vernacular for residents of Rio Linda), to wit:
“The Founding Fathers have determined that failure to WATCH politicians – ALL POLITICIANS (even those you may worship!) – is dangerous to the security of this nation and to the freedoms we paid such a heavy price to TRY to leave you and your children.” “Government is not reason. Government is not eloquence. It is FORCE. And, like fire, it is a DANGEROUS SERVANT AND A FEARSOME MASTER.”

That from that notorious tinfoil hat wearing, radical wing-nut, George Washington.

BUSH'S POSITION NOT KNOWN</font color=red>

Bush's view of the phased program is uncertain given his opposition to a blanket amnesty for undocumented immigrants. He says an amnesty would give lawbreakers an unfair break.

Does Bush have any idea what-so-ever as to what he is doing? Why did he start all this mess in the first place if he is so concerned now about giving "lawbreakers an unfair break"?

Talk about a dim bulb.....

Thanks, Marine Inspector, for your offer of assistance. It is very kind.

I've actually received a sympathetic ear from many in our government. Going way back to original State Dept. suggestions when we were married overseas (and while I was working in a foreign country), to the very kind assistance and repeated indulgences of the State Dept. attorney who writes and promulgates the worldwide immigration visa regs/guidelines (I will send him a nice letter when this is finished, since I can't offer him a dinner at The Palm), and even to specific individuals in Congress and in the INS who have nudged things along as best they can.

But the problems as you are well aware are huge: the matter of inadequate (in fact laughable) INS funding; of dysfunctional application processing systems (esp. computer systems); and the general irresponsible and hypocritical attitudes of the House and Senate toward what they cynically and callously regard as vote-getting strategems. That last part is, frankly, revolting.

I've talked with many people in the past three weeks about this hoax of an amnesty. And I've come to the conclusion that no matter how long my wife and I must wait to legally gain her citizenship (which I assure you she would be most honored to obtain), the dishonorable, thoughtless, and imprudent actions of the George Bush Jr. administration will forever cast a blight on the rule of law, the mere notion of fairness, and (unintended consequence #3) the national security of the United States.

Bill Clinton pardoned one felony tax evader. George Bush and Condelleza Rice will provide succor to six million criminals and at the same time destroy the borders and laws of the United States.

these folk are off limits to organized labor or registration in political action groups or parties,

But that's the whole point of labor's otherwise indecipherable backing of the amnesty plan: more members and thus $bucks$ for the hotel workers' unions, the day laborer's unions, and the farmworker's unions.

Different people have different political (and monetary and power) motives for backing amnesty. Even personally, I have zero problems with immigration generally or even guest worker programs specifically. I think legal immigration has always been a good thing for America.

But at worst the status quo should be maintained until after the 750,000 backlogged applications now at INS have been processed and adjudicated.

And then Presidente Fox should fork over to INS the $12 billion needed to implement the illegal Mexican alien "regularization" which he is trying to force down our dam**d throats.

As a minor matter, where is the single journalist in the United States who has reported on the real practical matters surrounding these issues? I guess drunk again at the Hyannisport bar with Teddy, dunking Chips Ahoy in tumblers of Bushmills (I kid you not).

Absolutely, and it is not out of the question for the congress to pass legislation delaying the union membership and dues from these "guest workers" until such time as they are eligible to vote (like when they gain citizenship).

There is not doubt that they are here, but given a choice between being sent back or registration into a worker program with the above restrictions, I think they would be willing to stay out of politics for a while. If they are not, then send them to Boris and lets help him send them home.

Sorry, but "measures short of amnesty", (guest worker, bracero etc) is just amnesty for criminals on the delayed program.

They have to go back to country of origin and do it the right way. Anything else rewards line jumping criminals.
