LOS ANGELES (AP) The Los Angeles Times is closing its three weekly community news sections, eliminating 18 jobs. The last issues of the San Gabriel Valley Weekly, the South Bay Weekly and the Westside Weekly will appear next week, Times spokeswoman Martha Goldstein said Friday.
The weeklies have been losing ad revenue since last May, when the Times launched a California section to handle regional and local news. Since then, businesses have shifted their ad dollars away from the weeklies and into the new section, Times Publisher John Puerner and Editor John S. Carroll told employees in a memo.
The paper also has been moving its editorial philosophy away from ``block-by-block'' coverage and toward a broader approach to news, the Times officials said.
``The combination of a loss of advertising and a shift in editorial focus led to the decision to close the weekly sections,'' the memo said.
``Block-by-block''-type stories still will be covered through the paper's Times Community News subsidiary, the officials said. That division publishes six papers and has a separate editorial staff.
In July the Times announced it was eliminating about 1,570 part-time circulation jobs as part of a previously announced shift to outside distribution networks.
The paper is owned by Chicago-based Tribune Co., which has been implementing a 6 percent layoff of its work force.

OK - I'll be the straight man while you do the one liners. ;-)
...while ordinary people lose their jobs.
I can't celebrate since I've seen a lot of friends and co-workers suffer the effects of layoffs. Upper management screws up and fires the rank and file.
How about those headlines, eh? =^)
Nah....spellchecker is off tonight. ;-)
Robert Scheer makes an appearance in Ronald Radosh's memoir Commies. Big surprise there, huh?
