DDT hysteria launched by ink
The Deseret News ^ | 9/4/2001 | Sheldon Richman

For all our preoccupation with ridding society of cocaine, heroin and marijuana, little thought is given to the most dangerous and mind-altering substance of all: ink.

Do you doubters need proof? Take Rachel Carson's famous book, "Silent Spring."

In 1963 Carson wrote a book claiming that the insecticide DDT was damaging the ability of birds to reproduce. In truth, she misrepresented the research of James DeWitt, whose work, reported in 1956, did not indicate that pheasants and quail were less likely to hatch their eggs when fed lots of DDT. She also charged that DDT caused liver cancer in human beings. Again, there was no evidence for that. DDT has actually been found to reduce tumors in animals. That was reported, among other places, in a National Cancer Institute journal in 1975.

Nevertheless, her book set off a panic that led to the banning of the insecticide in the United States in 1972 by Richard Nixon's EPA chief William Ruckleshaus, despite an EPA administrative law judge's ruling that DDT isn't hazardous. Moreover, the environmental movement has pressured developing countries to stop using it. The attempt to adopt a treaty to ban it or regulate it out of existence goes on, with the rich part of the world using economic pressure against the poor part. There is one small problem. DDT kills mosquitoes that carry malaria. It stands to reason that if DDT use were stopped or curtailed, the mosquito population would thrive — and the human population would not. That's exactly what has happened. The poor people of the world have been the chief victims.

Deaths from malaria in the developing world had been falling precipitously — until the anti-DDT campaign got under way. Then infections and deaths skyrocketed. The number of cases in Sri Lanka has tracked the use and nonuse of DDT in that country: 2.8 million in 1948; 17 — yes, 17 — in 1963; 500,000 in 1969. Sub-Saharan Africa is the worst hit: A child dies from the disease there every 40 seconds.

And it's on the rise. Why? "Although many factors contribute to increasing malaria, the strongest correlation is with decreasing number of houses sprayed with DDT," says Dr. Donald R. Roberts of the U.S. Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.

Thankfully, more and more people are realizing that the campaign against DDT has been a catastrophe. The Wall Street Journal reports that South Africa is turning the tide on malaria by resuming its use of DDT. Thanks to the pesticide, the country had kept the disease in check.

The continuing campaign against DDT by the United Nations and the environmental movement is outrageous. In the time it has taken to write this article, more than 83,000 more people have contracted malaria and more than 600 have died. No doubt about it. Rachel Carson's use of ink has led to the deaths of tens of millions of people, more than have ever been killed by pesticides or illegal drugs. But is she vilified? No. She has been sainted by the ruling establishment. The Post Office even put her picture on a stamp.

I'm not implying that the government should ban or control the use of ink, just as it shouldn't control the use of DDT or drugs. What I'm saying is that people ought to use their common sense and not give in to the latest environmental hysteria.

A couple of weeks ago there was an article in the New Yorker which outlined the development of DDT and its use as a 'miracle' against malaria.

More interesting was a letter to the editor in the next issue from the son of the man who was responsible for introducing it into the US.>

He related that, as a stunt, his father would eat a chunk of DDT to allay any doubts about it's safety, and that when that didn't work, his kids would step up and eat a chunk, with his blessing. None suffered any ill-effects.

Rachael Carson's book (not to mention other junk-science from the left) is responsible for more human deaths than DDT.

I wish more people would wake up and realize that enviros WANT more people to die. According to them, humanity is the parasitic infection, not malaria.

We need the Republicans to speak out. Maybe we could get Helms to decry the racist attitudes of the left and how they are wilfully killing poor African children at the rate of 1 every 40 seconds.

That would bring some attention to the issue.

She was one of the patron saints of my ex-wife, along with Elie Weasel (mispelling intentional). Liberals don't mind lying if it's in a good cause.

Well, you know, the ends justify the means. And I used to like Eli Wiesel (sp?), I admire him for what he lived through during the Holocaust, but his other activities are disgusting.

Good post about a subject that needs reintroducing. The DDT thing was probably the first environmentalists power movement by fear, followed soon after by the asbestos debacle. Once they got away with that the race was on until it finally reached the rediculous state we are in now with sucker fish over man and global cooling being rapidly replaced by global warming, mandating the elimination of the internal combustion engine and the use of fossil fuel. Many leftists "scientists" would swear up is down if it would further the socialist cause.

I am right now suffering with my second malaria in less than four weeks. Although it is just tersiana, level one, it is no fun.

I think DDT is legal in this country (Indonesia) and I'm going to get some and treat my house, etc. That is, I'll get some just as soon as I am over the dizziness and nausea and am strong enough to ride my motorcycle without falling over.

Stupid, stupid eko-wackos. Thanks to them homo sapiens should now be on the endangered list.

Well, and I think that is the way the environmentalists want it. I really think that they want to rid the earth of almost all humans, only 3 or 4 million left to enjoy the pristineness of it all. Of course, they would be amongst the lucky few. I'll never forget Ted Turner saying that he shouldn't have had five children, that the earth couldn't support them. I thought that was one of the worst statements I have ever heard. And I wonder what his kids thought of that.
