It was epochal and marks a new era in our political history. And for once everyone rushed to name clearly what happened.
The morning after the 2026 midterm elections, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis was searingly blunt. For the Republican Party it was “close to an extinction level event.” Its effects will “reverberate for the next decade or more.”
“It was a Watergate-level repudiation,” said Ted Cruz, soon to be Texas’ lone Republican senator, on a podcast.
Ronna McDaniel, Republican National Committee chairman in the first Trump term, told Fox News on Wednesday the election wasn’t only a Democratic wave, it was “a Republican rebellion.”
It wasn’t only the number of Democratic victories, it was their size. It was a night of landslides—James Talarico of Texas by 12, Jon Ossoff of Georgia by 18, Roy Cooper of North Carolina by 20.
Jonathan Martin on “Morning Joe” said the old red-blue paradigm has ended. Derek Thompson similarly marveled on his Substack: “Kansas voted like New Hampshire and Mississippi voted like Wisconsin.”
In the age of Trump all politics is national.
A rising 10-year-old coalition came apart. Donald Trump, Steve Bannon and others had slapped its platform together based on what got cheers at the rallies of 2016. They made it up as they went along. But it takes a kind of genius to spy, imagine and build a coalition and make it hold for a decade, and it means plenty that it collapsed.
Mr. Trump was the author of the ruin. He picked the candidates to back, made the decisions on strategy, decided what to say and when to spend the money in his war chest. (Late in the election, according to the New York Times, when the price of ads had been jacked up; he considered it “my money.”)

165,000 jobs in October.
Trillions invested in the US.
Reshoring running apace.
Border secured-
Illegals getting thrown out.
Massive Government backed fraud exposed with prosecutions.
World leader in energy production.
Don-roe doctrine building cooperation, peace, and growth.
Yeah, Guys can’t shower with little girls so let’s burn the country down.
My HATE of The Left can’t be expressd enough.
Who cares what the WSJ and that old bat have to say.
His strategy this year wasn’t the best.
I thought going into Iran was a bad idea from theget go, but I do not pretend to have all the needed information to make such a decision.
Way too much time/energy on renaming lakes and the arch.
Making light of the fuel prices was a very bad look.
That said,
He has shown the Republican Party how to forge new coalitions to open states that had been out of reach, something a Ted Cruz, and certainly not a Mitt Romney, could have done.
He has smoked out bad guys within the party, and has moved the center of gravity of the party in a badly needed way.
He really did a good job of controlling the border, even if he could not undo all of Biden’s damage.
Thank you Mr. President. Make the best of the current situation, and course correct for the new reality.
I do.
I love the smell of Deep State desperation in the morning.
Peggy Noonan, the mouthpiece for the GOPe. If you thought Democrats were the only ones popping the champagne corks Tuesday night think again. The Republican establishment were probably at those celebrations too!
The Republican Establishment also got swept aside, along with the Democratic Establishment.
This was a complete sea change. The Democrats went young, and it paid off.
We’re going to have to figure out how to do the same.
The WSJ can kiss my butt.
The GOP Congress did NOTHING.
Peggy Noonan is way past her “sell by” date. She was calling for exactly this result in an op Ed published last week. I remember a radio host reading her editorial the morning after Obama was first elected on sort of a “c’est la vie” theme. She’s blind to the dangers of the other side, and her deep state hackery is far beyond merely tiresome
You need to read and listen and accept.
Donnie was told to stay home for Aug Sept and Oct and avoid making the midterms about him.
The Dens did that to Biden and did well.
Arrogant Know it all Donnie refused.
He destroyed the GOP .
He flipped Texas and Ohio BLUE by showing up and driving up Dem turnout. Donnie did exactly what the Dems wished for.
Donnie is hated by 70 % of the US.
Donnie needs to resign before the Dems hearing dig into his massive insider trading schemes, Putin funding Donnie JR wedding, Donnie sleazy NY realtor- envoy calling the KGB bloodthirsty butcher Putin a great humanitarian.
In my old home, when the dryer was drying, the hot air would make my next door bedroom swelter. Hot air. Peggy is a blast furnace. If she were likeable, and not so puffed-up, “Peg ‘O My Heart,” would be appropriate. https://youtu.be/71nundLDIvY?si=q6qJj1_YfcZUwAbj
It wasn’t corruption, you idiot. Trump did more to find and eradicate corruption than any previous administration. For me, it was his ego and wasting time renaming gulfs and lakes. I also blame the GOP for its own silly infighting and not being able to even get members of its own party to pass the Save act. It’s Thune not having the brains to call for votes on critical pieces of legislation. It’s Congress holding 513 hearings since 2021 and those hearings not producing one arrest. It’s the monumental waste of time and OUR money in hearings slinging mud at each other instead of trying to solve the problems faced by the American people. It’s the corruption manifested by Omar and watching the GOP sit by and do f’ing nothing about it. The GOP is a spineless group of people who can’t get out of their own way. Almost 70 years as a Republican and I can’t find one thing nice to say about them.
There's plenty of blame to go around w/in the R party - not just Trump.
RINO tears. This is rich. This old bag needs to go away.
Puhleeze! They are hoping he resigns before he picks up that golden veto pen.
