Republicans Forgot How to Win Elections
Wall Street Journal ^ | November 4, 2026 | John Cornyn

Posted on 11/05/2026 3:39:30 AM PST by karpov

Even before the polls closed on Tuesday, an epic blame game had begun. How did Republicans fumble the success of 2024 into this midterm meltdown? How did we lose so many Senate seats, including in my home state of Texas, a conservative cornerstone for more than three decades and a state Donald Trump carried by 14 points in 2024?

Die-hard Never Trumpers will rush to eulogize the MAGA movement. Some populists will shop a stab-in-the-back narrative that blames the traditional conservatives they themselves chased away. But both sides miss the point. This week’s beat-down wasn’t only foreseeable, it was foreseen—because our party forgot four basic rules of coalition politics.

First, successful coalitions add, they don’t subtract. In 2024, a unified Republican Party dominated among the white working class, won Hispanic men outright and won the largest share of black voters since the 1970s. Lifelong conservatives and first-time Republican voters all embraced our message of lower prices, border security, cultural sanity and American strength. This year, losing candidates like Ken Paxton and Mike Collins shrank the tent, obsessing over “RINOs” and political theater. In Texas, statewide candidate Bo French poisoned the well even further with blatant bigotry against Indian-Americans, anathema to the party of Lincoln and Reagan. When nominees show contempt for voters and request a smaller Republican Party, voters oblige them.

The second forgotten lesson was even simpler: Be likeable. We are no longer in 2010, when articulate, appealing conservatives like Marco Rubio and Pat Toomey challenged “establishment” candidates over real policy differences. Today, it is fringe challengers who play down voting records and policy in favor of performative politics. A strange reverse personality test has taken root. If a candidate talks like an affable, reasonable person, he must be a sellout.

Point #1: John Cornyn didn’t write this. It was ghost written (Karl Rove is that you?). John Cornyn is borderline senile. Anyone who actually has paid attention to the joker realizes these aren’t his words.

Point #2: ESAD, Cornyn you Assistant DemonRat elitist sack of self-serving crap.

Thank you for your attention to this matter! :-)

America becomes less and less White and Republicans will win less and less elections.

When your opponent cheats and you do nothing about it you get the results THEY want.

Voting for RINOs isn’t the cure. It’s exactly what got us here. They gave us open borders and open elections for decades. Hopefully Republican frogs will finally realize they’re in boiling water.

It was not “too big to fail” because it was not “too big to rig”.

John Cornyn didn’t write this.

Good catch. This piece doesn't sound anything like him.

Had Trump attacked Iran in February of 2027, instead of 2026, we would have seen a normal mid term and likely held the senate, maybe even the house. By definition the electorate is of average intelligence with the memory of a goldfish.

Gasoline is pricey so let’s elect socialist, islamophobia-fascists. It doesn’t make sense but in an angry outburst that’s what the country did.

A nuclear-armed islamophobia-fascist state with nearly five decades of chanting death to American and the near-term capability to bring it about might have motivated any rational president.

Just saying…

They have not forgotten. They dont want to. When they want to, they can do so.

Such Mitch McConnell getting vital justices approved.

They said the same thing about Iraq. Trump even mentioned that during the Republican Party Presidential Debate in 2015!

It's a pattern I've seen repeated ever since Gingrich was forced out in the mid-90s: any real, conservative reform is anathema to much of the local and state-wide Republican donor class, who prefer Democrat-lite policies, especially "free trade" and mass immigration to lower wages and push up profits.

Many Republicans in opposition declaimed loudly about Roe, gun rights, immigration, or more recently about tranny child mutilation.

But when they win, they are like the dog that finally catches the bumper and have no intention of enacting a real conservative agenda. So they do absolutely nothing except fund the status quo.

The other fundamental problem is demographic: the flood of Hispanics, many of whom receive public benefits, the Indian scammer class, and in the South or Texas, newcomers from CA or other liberal states who bring their pathological political beliefs with them.

Last but not least is the Democrats have perfected their fraud machine: look at Talarico-- 500K more votes than any Democrat has ever received in Texas. LOL

The sad fact of the matter is that Trump was far too passive in enacting his agenda in the face of the fraud, racial, and class opposition facing him.

And then Trump got involved in another war in the Middle East.

Well, another so far unsuccessful war in the ME.

I would also point out that the Iranian nuke program is real and they already have enough highly enriched uranium for several bombs and the missiles to carry them.

Trump's problem in foreign policy is that he always expects to negotiate a "deal" even with those not interested in one.

Bibi offered to help us in this war. President Trump rudely ignored him.

Now President Trump gets to take all the credit for the utter disaster. Complete failure. Where was Rubio, Vance, and for that matter Melania to pull him back from the brink? Age limit should be 80 years old for President. He went wacky.

We get ballrooms, monuments, triumphal arches, White house wrestling matches. After the first two weeks of war he lost interest, went chasing after more sparkly things. He reneged on his promises. The war started fast and furious. And then crickets.

You just made his point!
People like you just helped so much to elect Talarico!
Well, thank you! 😊
In my book Cornyn was lot and lot better than Talarico!

To win the election, you need to get majority!
MAGA is big, but far from majority!

So to win, you need a coalition.
In order for MAGA to win, you surely need a lot of RINO’s!!!

The combative MAGA people seems dead set to purify the party from all people who are not exactly like them.
I see it all over.
Since MAGA is indeed big, the MAGA candidate invariably wins the primary, but then, also invariably, looses the general election.

You, people, get it - the people whom you call RINO’s are NOT your enemies, the Democrats are!
