This is an earthquake,” Democratic Latino operative Sergio Gonzalez told POLITICO on the sidelines of Texas Governor-elect Gina Hinojosa’s victory party in Austin. “Latinos were angry. They were angry this election.”
While the entire country shifted toward Democrats, nowhere shifted as dramatically as predominantly Latino areas. Across the nation Latino voters of all backgrounds — Mexican Americans and Central Americans in the Southwest, heartland and on the West Coast, Puerto Ricans and Dominicans in Pennsylvania, Venezuelans, Puerto Ricans and Cubans in Florida — unhappy with the economy and furious over Trump’s immigration enforcement fled the party in droves.
In a single cycle, Democrats appeared to reset Republicans’ gradual decade-long gains with Latino voters.
Latino voters who “broke for President Trump in historical numbers [in 2024] … had to make a hard change because their paycheck wasn’t moving fast and far enough for them,” said Trump’s former Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer in an interview Tuesday night. “And Republicans ran out of runway on that.”
The epicenter of the earthquake was Texas, where a turnout surge — especially among younger first-time Latino voters — helped Democrats sweep Texas’ statewide offices — the first time since 1994 they’ve won any at all. Republicans won only one of the five House seats they had gerrymandered...

“furious over Trump’s immigration enforcement fled the party in droves”
I don’t buy this at all....legal latinos hate illegals and the freebies they get- one of the reasons they went for Trump in 2024...
Let’s see how much the Latinos are rushing back to democrats after they open the borders and places like, say, the Rio Grande Valley, resemble the very countries they fled from. Take like a sec.
I was surprised that Ted Cruz was bashed so violently on the thread when he said Texas is in trouble. Nobody believed him and thought he was full of crap. You have to go back and ask yourself why you didn’t believe him? There’s something wrong in that I think many here just do not like to hear anything negative about voting, especially. It’s very strange.
Exactly the lie JD Vance told everybody they were going to try to spread. No, this was about the Iran war and cost of living/the economy. This was NOT about immigration.
It was the economy, not immigration. Latinos already here have no desire to see the US turn into the homelands they fled. They had no problem with Trump enforcing the southern border in 2024 and they have no problem with it now. The Iran war and the Fed’s refusal to lower interest rates explain pretty much everything about yesterday for all demographics, Latinos included.
It appears that racial minorities are just as racist as they claim white people are.
Surprise, surprise, surprise.
So Latinoids voted for Trump to deport illegals but then got mad about the deportations ?
No, the election was lost because Republican voters didn’t show up. Trump campaigned on tough immigrant enforcement in 2024, and those voters who supported him then had no problem with it.
It was about Iran war and the cost of living. Politico is blowing smoke. This is how they make an issue when there isn’t one.

Yep, as some ‘RAT said years ago… “It’s the economy, stupid”.
“I was surprised that Ted Cruz was bashed so violently on the thread when he said Texas is in trouble. Nobody believed him and thought he was full of crap.”
I think he is full of crap (I went from being a Cruz supporter to thinking he was full of crap the day he threw us under the bus when leftist violence prevented the Trump rally in Chicago) - but I believed him about Texas GOP being in trouble this election. There were plenty of indicators.
Is it likely that the excited Dems will overreach so much that they will become persona non grata in TX and it will return to Red?
Trump went out his way to minimize actual immigration enforcement and maximize the pain. If he’d pushed for universal E-Verify and stepped-up action against employers instead of having ICE brawling with people in the street, it would have been much more effective and wouldn’t have turned the normies off.
Don’t count on it. The Latinos aren’t the problem, it’s the Hindus and Muslims.
I’m not in Texas, i’m in NY, so i don’t know...but i know of latinos here who HATE the illegals...
True. Rubio is a great choice
He’s tied to the hip with Trump, that makes him a non-starter now.
Question:
Let’s say gas prices drop in the next two months and the economy booms. Will Trump remain unpopular?
Hahaha
Just posted about this in another thread.
JD was smart to try to distance himself from this “elephant in the room.”
It wasn’t Iran like he’s trying to deflect. It was largely the Latino vote especially in places like Texas.
That said, time heals scars and maybe over the next year or two some of the damage done can be repaired or gets forgotten as other issues arise That doesn’t mean open borders and caving. But tone down the grandstanding and rhetoric. Stop making a spectacle of this. Sell the idea of good border security as something the Latino population in the US also benefits from, which is true!
They don’t prosper when the social services are over stretched, the tax base is poor, there is massive competition for jobs, and you have unvetted criminals living in their communities.
It’s not like the criminal illegal is looking for a home in Kalorama DC, Martha’s Vineyard, etc. Nope, they find a home where their neighbors all have Hispanic names (income, language, relatives/support network, drive this).
It needs to be made clear, that the open border talk is more or less screwing them the hardest.
