U.S. President Donald Trump called Greenland the greatest gift the United States had ever received in a call to Fox News on Tuesday.
“Remember, [Europe] just gave the United States the greatest gift we were ever given. Do you know what it was? Greenland. We just got Greenland, you know that, right?” he said during a broadcast about Tuesday’s midterm elections, which was reshared on X by the U.S. State Department. Someone else on the call quickly clarified that Trump was referring to “a military deal.”
Until September, Trump had repeatedly pushed for the U.S. to take control of the large, mineral-rich island, which is a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, citing national security reasons.
His fixation on the idea, and his repeated refusals to rule out using military force to take the territory — as well as his use of tariffs against allied countries he saw as standing in his way — stretched the NATO alliance close to breaking point.
At NATO’s annual summit in July, Trump said the island “should be controlled by the United States, not by Denmark,” provoking warnings from European leaders who maintain the territory is not for sale and that its future should be left to its people.
In September, Trump signed a defense agreement with the prime ministers of Greenland and Denmark, ending the stand-off. The deal expands U.S. military access and presence, and effectively grants NATO countries exclusivity on mining, while recognizing Denmark’s sovereignty and Greenlanders’ right to self-determination.
American voters head to the polls on Tuesday for the midterm elections. During the call, Trump said he thinks the results will be “better than you think.” Democrats are widely expected to make gains against the president’s Republican party.

Looks like Christmas came early this year!
A lot of his decisions on foreign policy were great. Iran was the stinking turd in the soup however.
Iran has been stinking the world up for almost 50 years
Yeah, terrific. The country’s going to hell and a handbasket, but we got a Greenland “gift”. Just awesome...
Hardly.
True. But its a problem so big that no one could fix in a summer campaign and it was hubris to think so.
Its one example where a propeganda campaign to convince Americans to do the work would have been needed way in advance. Instead it looked too much like Iraq all over again.
I hope I can manage as well as Trump when I’m 80 years old.
But still.... his age is catching up with him.
Quickly.
He keeps repeating that. It makes no sense.
And Nero fiddled while Rome burned
I don’t know what our President is talking about. Europe didn’t give us anything. Greenland is not ours. It still is part of Denmark.
> Its one example where a propaganda campaign to convince Americans to do the work… <
Right. And here’s where the Founders were wise. They gave Congress, not the president, the power to start a war. The president had to first convince the people, through their representatives in Congress.
But we don’t follow the Constitution in that regard anymore. Not since WW2. And the results have not been good.
Secretary of State Seward just telegraphed. He begs to differ with the President.
The President is a great man, but remarks like this and his going on about the Reflecting Pool, which NOBODY cares about, on the eve of the election, makes me so worried about him.
His constant exaggeration is tiring! Yesterday reflected that.
Well not doing that didn’t work out for Republicans very well
Its not a bad thing for him to have said actually. A win is a win. Americans like winning. The problem with his foreign policy is that people wanted wins with benefits for their economic outlook.
Iran didn’t help with that. It raised prices and derailed the Maga movement.
I suspect its possible Trump expected the Iran situation would do just that but I can’t fathom the trade off if he went ahead and decided to go after Iran anyway.
It was time to declaw Iran. Trump just happened to draw the unlucky straw of history. I’m thankful he’s doing it.
