DETROIT – An apparently serious injury to Detroit Lions star Jack Campbell halted the game against the Vikings for several minutes on Sunday.!role~Preview!mt~photo!fmt~JPEG%20Baseline)
Campbell, a Pro Bowl linebacker and one of the leaders of the Lions defense, stayed down on the field after tackling Vikings tight end T.J. Hockenson.
He remained on the field for multiple commercial breaks, surrounded by the entire Lions roster and many Vikings players, before being strapped onto the medical cart and driven to the tunnel.
No specific details about the injury have been released yet. Several of Campbell’s defensive teammates were emotional following the injury. The TV broadcast showed Aidan Hutchinson looking particularly shaken up.
The Lions got a stop on fourth down the very next play to maintain their 12-7 lead in the fourth quarter. But a few minutes later, the Vikings marched down the field for a touchdown and a two-point conversion to take a 15-12 lead.
The Lions defense also lost star safety Brian Branch and emerging pass rusher D.J. Wonnum earlier in the game.
Coming off a big win over the Green Bay Packers last week, the Lions need a victory Sunday if they want any real shot at competing for an NFC North title. The Vikings, at 6-0, are the only undefeated team left in the NFL and already lead the Lions by two games in the standings.

Prayers for Campbell.
Vikings were the last undefeated team. No More.
And the members of the 1972, Miami Dolphins, if any are still alive, or cracking open another bottle of champagne
That picture eerily reminds me of Chuck Hughes.
Sounds bad. Let's hope it proves to not be, and that he expereinces a quick full recovery. Prayers up for Jack.
It’s concerning that there’s been little news.
From the sounds of it though, it is not surprising. Pray for the best for Jack. His teammate who was also involved in that hit is probably sick himself. No one wants these injuries, at laeast I hope not. 🙏🤙

The energy that these powerfully build bodies can exert given their mass and speed can, overwhelm and break the natural resistance to kinetic stress of the tissue. The bigger and faster they get , more tissue fails catastrophically.

One of the refs instantly saw that he was hurt and gently grabbed him around the waist and guided him to the side line.
I think that game had just gone into OT after a kicker missed an extra point.
Seemed like a huge bad break since the game should have been over.
Lions’ Jack Campbell carted off field, taken to hospital with scary neck injury
True but the game is much safer now than it was at the turn of the 20th century when Teddy Roosevelt threatened to ban football due to the number of player deaths.
So what if a player has a serious injury? Pro football is all about the money. /s
I know what you mean. No news is not necessarily good news. I’m only seeing reports of it having happened.
There was a large Lions color photo action poster on the wall of my 8th grade English class that included Chuck Hughes playing in a game before the one he died in. In that photo, he was upright with his back to the camera and you could see his name and number on his jersey.
That poster stayed up for a long time afterwards. It was one of those eerie reminders even though it was not a play-related injury.
He died of a heart attack between plays as he made his way towards the Lions’ huddle. Butkus called the ref’s over to have a look at him. He had severely clogged pulmonary arteries and he died where he fell at Tiger Stadium.
